1 Subjunctive The subjunctive in Spanish is not a tense of the verb, it’s a mood. It’s used to express a hope or a wish with the phrase Ojala que…. ( I hope that… or I wish that….). To form the subjunctive you: Conjugate the verb in the YO form present tense of the verb: Yo hablo 2. Drop the –o and then add the endings for the subjunctive. Construction of the subjunctive: Ojala que + (subject pronoun) + verb in the subjunctive + complete your sentence. Ojala que yo escriba el ensayo bien. (I hope that I write the essay well!)

2 Subjunctive endings. Verbs ending in –AR: Yo –e Tu –es El /Ella / Usted –e Nosotros / Nosotras –emos Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes –en These are the endings for REGULAR VERBS ONLY!! Verbs ending in –ER and –IR: Yo –a Tu –as El / Ella / Usted –a Nosotros / Nosotras –amos Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes –an

3 Irregular verbs in the subjunctive.
The verbs DAR, ESTAR, IR, SABER and SER are irregular in the subjunctive mood. Dar- de, des, de, demos, den Estar- este, estes, este, estemos, esten Ir- vaya, vayas, vaya, vayamos, vayan Saber- sepa, sepas, sepa, sepamos, sepan Ser- sea, seas, sea, seamos, sean Verbs that have a stem change, need to be stem changed and then conjugated in the subjunctive mood.

4 Ejemplos del subjuntivo:
Ojala que yo pase el examen de fisica. ( I hope that I pass the physics test!) Ojala que yo me gradue. (I hope that I graduate!) Ojala que ellas no hablen mucho. (I hope that they don’t talk too much!) Ojala que trabajen mucho. ( I hope that all of you work hard!) Ojala que el no mienta. (I hope that he does not lie)
