2  All the tenses we have been learning so far are in the INDICATIVO mood.  The indicativo mood is used to relate or describe something that is definite or real.  In Spanish there are 3 different MOODS: Indicativo, Subjuntivo and Imperativo (commands).  Now we are going to concentrate on the SUBJUNTIVO MOOD.

3  Our motto will be:  DON’T BE WORRIED. It is only subjunctive!

4  The formation: 3 steps! 1. Use the yo form of the present indicative. 2. Drop the –o and 3. Add the opposite endings: AR: e, es,e, emos, éis, en. ER/IR: a, as, a, amos, áis, an.

5  Most verbs that are irregular in the present indicative are regular in the subjunctive: Ejemplo:  VENIR  Venga  Vengas  Venga  Vengamos  Vengáis  Vengan  Otros: Traer, poner, Hacer!

7  STEM CHANGING VERBS :  The stem changing in - AR and -ER that change E>IE and O>UE in the indicative have the same stem changes in the subjunctive. (Not in nosotros and vosotros).  Conjuga: Entender, volver, encontrar

9  STEM CHANGING VERBS IN –IR:  The IR verbs that change E>IE/I and O>UE in the present indicative make the same changes in the subjunctive and…  In addition, they change the E>I and the O>U in the nosotros and vosotros form. (like in the pretérito).  Conjuga: Sentir, Dormir, Servir, Repetir and Reír.

11  Spelling changes :  Verbs ending in –car, -zar, -gar and - guar have spelling changes throughout the present subjunctive in order to preserve the pronunciation of the final consonant of the stem.  -car: c>qu, gar: g> gu, zar: z>c guar: gu>gü  Conjuga: Tocar, Pagar, averiguar, abrazar.

14  SIEMPRE CON:  Tal vez, acaso or quizás : Maybe! When the idea expressed is indefinite or doubtful! “Quizá/acaso/ tal vez vaya a la fiesta”. “ I may go to the party.”  When the idea is definite or very probable you use indicative : Teresa está en clase. Tal vez toma el examen de español. (She is in the classroom, maybe she is taking the Spanish test)

15  SIEMPRE CON Ojalá (que) I hope/I wish. “Ojalá que pase el examen.” I hope I pass the test.
