2 THE VERB ESTAR The verb estar means TO BE and is used to indicate LOCATION as well as to say how people FEEL. The verb ser (which we already learned) also means to be, but each of the verbs have very specific uses and cannot be used interchangeably. You can use this saying to help you remember the uses of the verb ESTAR:-

3 THE VERB ESTAR How you feel and where you are always use the verb Estar.

4 THE VERB ESTAR Estar is considered to be an irregular –ar verb. Because it does not follow the pattern of other –ar verbs, you will have to memorize the 5 forms (including accents)!

5 THE VERB ESTAR - CONJUGATIONS Yo estoy Tú estás Él/ella está Usted Nosotros/as estamos Ellos/ellas están Ustedes *****NOTICE THAT THE TOP TWO CONJUGATIONS DON’T HAVE ACCENTS BUT BOTTOM THREE DO!!!

The principal (m) is angry. 5. The students are busy. 6. He is very sad. 1. Yo estoy muy cansado(a) 2. La mujer está muy tranquila. 3. Ana y yo estamos muy deprimidas. 4. El director está enojado. 5. Los estudiantes están ocupados. 6. Él está muy triste.

9 NOTAS GRAMATICALES Whenever you have the word “de” (of/from) next to the word “el” (the), you have to combine the two words to create the contraction “ del ” This is not so when you have ‘de” and “la”. Theseremain two separate words. Look at the examples in your packet:

10 NOTA GRAMATICAL: DE + EL = DEL Whenever you have the word “de” (of/from) next to the word “el” (the), you have to combine the two words to create the contraction “ del ” This is not so when you have ‘de” and “la”. These remain two separate words. Look at the examples in your packet: La tiza está encima del borrador. (el borrador is masculine, so they combine to del) La biblioteca está al lado de la cafeteria. (la cafeteria is feminine, so it is “la”, so no contraction.
