Tell your partner about: 1. Two things you wish you had/hadn't done when you were younger. 2. Two regrets you have and you want to overcome.

Listen to the 5 conversations. Write the sentences with wish that you hear.

I wish we hadn’t gone out last night! I wish you wouldn’t call me that! I wish I could remember his name! I wish I’d never told you! I wish it was Friday!

Read the sentences and answer the questions: I wish I lived in Tahiti. I wish I could walk. I wish I’d eaten more ice cream. I wish my children would give me back all my money. 1. Which sentence talks about the future? 2. Which sentence talks about ability? 3. Which sentence talks about the past? 4. Do these sentences talk about real or hypothetical situations?

Now complete the form: I wish I lived in Tahiti. __ + ___ + ___ + ______ I wish I could walk. __+ ____+___+ _____+ __________ I wish I’d eaten more ice cream. ___ + _____ + ____+ __________ I wish my children would give me back all my money. __+____+___+____+_____________

Now mark the stressed words: I wish I’d eaten /ʌɪ/ /wɪʃ/ /ʌɪd/ /ˈiːt(ə)n/ more ice cream. /mɔː/ /ʌɪskriːm/

wish + past simple The past simple is used to refer to current situations that can't be changed. I wish I was better with money. I'm always in debt. wish + could We use could to refer to abilities we would like. I wish I could help, but I've got people over for dinner. wish + would We use would to refer to habits or to people, organisations or things that are 'refusing' to do something. I wish the government would invest in schools more. wish + past perfect The past perfect simple or continuous refers to regrets about the past and to things in the past we now want to be different. I wish I'd invested the money instead of spending it.

Choose the correct form. 1. I wish I hadn't taken out / didn't take out the loan, but at the time I really needed the cash. 2. I really wish I hadn't had to / didn't have to do this, but I've got no choice. 3. I wish I'd stuck / I stuck with my old job. 4. I miss travelling. I wish I'd been better / I was better with money so I could save up enough to go away again. 5. I wish I could've paid / could pay you, but I'm still waiting for people to pay me back what they owe me. 6. I wish you'd said / you said something. I might not have made such a fool of myself! 7. I wish there had been / was something I could say to make you feel better, but I know there isn't. 8. I sometimes wish I'd never started / I never started. It's turning out to be a bit of a nightmare.

Write five wishes on a piece of paper. I wish I was a millionaire...

Mingle and find a partner. Play a game of 'Be careful what you wish for'. Exchange your paper with a partner. Your partner should think how the wishes will go or have gone wrong. Then say and respond to the wishes. A: I wish I was a millionaire. B: Your wish is granted, but now you'll get married to someone who's only interested in your money. They'll divorce you and leave you penniless.
