4 Gustar + Infinitives What forms of gustar do we use?
gusta, gustan How do we know which to use? the thing after the verb determines the verb form we use What always comes before the conjugated form of gustar? An indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, les) How do we translate gustar? I like, you like, he/she/it likes, we like, you/they like What is the literal translation “Me gusta patinar.” Skating is pleasing to me. We put the words of our sentence backwards in Spanish. U1L1

7 Ser + de to talk about your origins
How do you say “I am from…” Yo soy de … . Yo is the subject pronoun (this word is optional) Soy is yo form of the verb SER de means from And the … will be the name of where you are from. How do you say where someone else is from? Example: Marta is from Puerto Rico. Marta es de Puerto Rico. Tomás is from Mexico. Tomás es de México. We are from the USA. Somos de EE.UU. Notice how the verb changes based on the subject of our sentence. U1L1

8 To ask where someone is from
How do you ask?: “Where are you from?” ¿De dónde eres tú? Notice the necessity of the ¿ and the ?, when you ask a question in Spanish you MUST have both question marks. de means from dónde means where eres is the verb used in this sentence tú is the subject pronoun in the sentence it tells you who you are talking about it tells you what form of the verb you need to use This sentence literally translates as: From where are you? home

We use the verb ser to identify people and things. We conjugate SER based on the who or what we are identifying. What are some examples of identifying words? U1L1

We don’t really have to many gender specific adjectives in English. English examples: pretty, handsome, not too many more All Spanish adjectives and nouns have a gender. The adjective and nouns must match in gender and number. Examples: the red house / la casa roja the red houses / las casas rojas the ugly boy / el chico feo the ugly boys/ los chicos feos Articles are a type of adjective so they must always match the noun in gender and number. We use adjectives to describe people and things. What are some examples of adjectives in Spanish? Where do we typically place adjectives in relation to the noun they are modifying? After the noun ex: la chica bonita We ask a question to find out identifying characteristics…what is that question in Spanish? ¿Cómo es…? (What is he/she/it like?)
