1 Lucas 24:13 – 35 13 El mismo día de la resurrección, iban dos de los discípulos hacia un pueblo llamado Emaús, situado a unos once kilómetros de Jerusalén, 14 y comentaban todo lo que había sucedido. 15 Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús se les acerco y comenzó a caminar con ellos;

2 16 pero los ojos de los dos discípulos estaban velados y no lo reconocieron. 17 Él les preguntó: ¿De que cosas vienen hablando, tan llenos de tristeza? 18 Uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le respondió: ¿Eres tú el único forastero que no sabe lo que ha sucedido estos días en Jerusalén? 19 El les pregunto: ¿Que cosa? Ellos le respondieron: Lo de Jesús el Nazareno, que era un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, ante Dios y ante todo el pueblo.

3 20 Como los sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes lo entregaron para que lo condenaran a muerte, y lo crucificaron. 21 Nosotros esperábamos que Él sería el libertador de Israel, y sin embargo, han pasado ya tres días desde que estas cosas sucedieron. 22 Es cierto que algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos han desconcertado, pues fueron de madrugada al sepulcro, 23 no encontraron el cuerpo y llegaron contando que se les habían aparecido unos ángeles, que les dijeron que estaba vivo.

4 24 Algunos de nuestros compañeros fueron al sepulcro y hallaron todo como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a Él no lo vieron. 25 Entonces Jesús les dijo: ¡Que insensatos son ustedes y que duros de corazón para creer todo lo anunciado por los profetas! 26 ¿Acaso no era necesario que el Mesías padeciera todo esto y así entrara en su gloria? 27 Y comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo con todos los profetas, les explico todos los pasajes de la Escritura que se referían a Él.

5 28 Ya cerca del pueblo a donde se dirigían, Él hizo como que iba mas lejos; 29 pero ellos le insistieron, diciendo: Quédate con nosotros, porque ya es tarde y pronto va a oscurecer. Y entro para quedarse con ellos. 30 Cuando estaban a la mesa, tomo un pan, pronuncio la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. 31 Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero Él se les desapareció.

6 32 Y ellos se decían el uno al otro: ¡Con razón nuestro corazón ardía, mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras! 33 Se levantaron inmediatamente y regresaron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus compañeros, 34 los cuales les dijeron: En verdad ha resucitado el Señor y se le ha aparecido a Simón. 35 Entonces ellos contaron lo que les había pasado en el camino y como lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.

9 Luke 24:13 - 35 13 That very day of resurrection, two of Jesus disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, 14 and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. 15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,

10 16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, What are you discussing as you walk along? They stopped, looking downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days? 19 And he replied to them, What sort of things? They said to him, The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

11 20 how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. 21 But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. 22 Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning 23 and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.

12 24 Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see. 25 And he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory? 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.

13 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. 29 But they urged him, Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. 30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. 31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.

14 32 Then they said to each other, Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us? 33 So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them 34 who were saying, The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon! 35 Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

17 Reflections on Luke 24:13 - 35 Reflexiones en Lucas 24:13 - 35 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 8, 2011 Today is the Third Sunday of Easter. We will reflect on the story of the apparition of the risen Christ to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. It is good to remember that St. Jerome said it is good to notice the literal sense of the word of God, and the spiritual sense. We will see the rich spiritual sense of the early Fathers of the Church.

18 Ahora es el Tercer Domingo de Pascua. Vamos a reflexionar sobre la historia de la aparición de Cristo resucitado a los dos discípulos en el camino de Emaús. Es bueno recordar que San Jerónimo dice que es bueno notar el sentido literal de la palabra de Dios, y el sentido espiritual. Vamos a ponerle atención a el rico sentido espiritual de los Padres tempranos de la Iglesia.

19 First of all we note an observation by Cyril of Alexandria (Commentary on Luke, Chapter 24). He says these two disciples belonged to the number of the seventy (Luke 10:1), and that Cleopass companion was Simon. As they walked, they mourned Jesus as among the dead. Jesus drew near, but their eyes were restrained. They did not recognize him until the breaking of the bread.

20 Primeramente notamos una observación de Cirilio de Alejandría (Comentario Acerca d Lucas, Capitulo 24). Dice que los dos discípulos pertenecían al numero de los setenta (Lucas 10:1) y que el compañero de Cleopas era Simón. Al ir andando, lamentaban por Jesús como que si estuviera muerto. Jesús se acercó, pero sus ojos fueron detenidos. No lo reconocieron hasta al quebrar el pan.

21 Ephrem the Syrian (Commentary on Tatians Diatessaron 2.24) reminds us that at his radiant birth a radiant star appeared, and at his dark death there appeared dark gloom. The Lord of the star appears in his own person to those two disciples, but he hides his identity from them, until the appropriate moment. Pray the Lord in his mercy reveal himself to you as you pray over the scriptures and attend Holy Mass with devotion.

22 Efraín el Sirio (Comentario Acerca Diatessaron 2:24) nos recuerda que en su radiante nacimiento una estrella apareció, y en su oscura muerte apareció una oscura tristeza. El Señor de la estrella aparece en su propia persona a los dos discípulos, pero esconde su identidad de ellos, hasta el momento apropiado. Pídele a Dios que en su misericordia se te manifieste. Aseguradamente el Señor se revela cada vez que estudies la palabra de Dios, y participes con devoción en la Santa Misa.

23 Why were their eyes restrained? Why did they not recognize him immediately? St. Augustine (Sermon 232.3) says that it was because their hearts needed more instruction. Jesus took care of meeting their needs, instructing them from the Holy Scriptures, until they were ready to recognize him. Isnt it somewhat the same with us?

24 ¿Porqué fueron cerrados sus ojos? ¿Porqué no los reconocieron inmediatamente? San Agustín (Sermón 232:3) dice que fue porque sus corazones necesitaban más instrucción. Jesús personalmente tuvo cuidado de ellos, instruyéndolos de las sagradas escrituras, hasta que estaban listos para reconocerlo. ¿No es así también algo igual con nosotros?

25 What did Jesus find when he went among the ordinary people like the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus? They had given up hope. They said: We had hoped… (Luke 24.21). Jesus appears alive and well, he walks with them, he shares his knowledge of the scriptures with them, and he finally manifests himself at the proper time. Is hope dead in you? Have you given up on Jesus? Do you think he is dead, or do you think he is alive? Have faith, says St. Augustine. The one you cannot see is within you.

26 ¿Qué encontró Jesús al ir a la gente común y corriente como los dos discípulos en el camino a Emaús? Habían perdido la esperanza. Dijeron: Nosotros esperábamos... (Lucas 24:21). Jesús entonces se aparece, sano y vivo, anda con ellos, habla con ellos, come con ellos, compartiendo su conocimiento de las escrituras. Finalmente se les manifiesta a la hora apropiada. Y esto nos trae al punto de preguntar: ¿Está muerta la esperanza en ti? ¿Te has dado por vencido acerca las cosas de Jesús? ¿Piensas tu que está vivo o que está muerto? Ten fe, dice San Agustín. 27 St. Augustine notes that it appears that the two disciples were shattered when they say Jesus hanging on the tree, such that they forgot about his teaching (Sermon 235:1-2). They did not expect him to rise, nor did they hold on to what he had promised. When we suffer, let us not forget about the teachings of Jesus when he says if we are to follow him, we must pick up our cross daily (Luke 9:23).

28 San Agustin nota que parece que los corazones de los dos discípulos estaban quebrados, por ver visto a Jesús colgando en la cruz, de tal manera que se olvidaron de sus enseñanzas (Sermón 235:1-2). No esperaban que se levantara de la muerte, ni se aferraban a lo que Él les había prometido. Al llegar el sufrimiento, hay que recordar las enseñanzas de Jesús: levanta tu cruz diariamente, y seguime (Lucas 9:23).

29 What are the results of having seen Jesus? A man named Eusibius (in Ecclesiastical History 3:32) mentions that persecution came with Roman Emperors Nero and Domitian. In that persecution, Simon the son of Cleopas, was second bishop of the church at Jerusalem.

30 ¿Cuáles fueron los resultados en esos dos discípulos al ver a Jesús? Un hombre llamado Eusibius ( en Historia Eclesiástica 3:32) mentiona que vino la persecución de los Emperadores Romanos Nero y Domitian. En esa persecución, sabemos que Simón el hijo de Clopas, fue el segundo obispo de Jerusalén.

31 He gave up his life by martyrdom after seeing Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Such great generosity came from receiving Jesus in Holy Comunion. He moves us in a most profound way.

32 Entrego su vida en el martirio. Después de ver a Jesús al quebrar el pan (en la Santa Misa). Esta gran generosidad viene de estar en union con Cristo que conmueve profundamente.

33 St Augustine (Sermon 236a:4) notes that the good thief, the robber who died with Jesus, gives the disciples a lesson. He did not give up hope, even when he saw Jesus hanging on the cross. He did not give up hope, even as he himself hung on his cross beside Jesus. Cry out, robber, from the cross! Dont give up! Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!

34 San Agustín (Sermón 236a:4) nota que el buen ladrón, un bandido que murió con Jesús, da una buena lección a los discípulos. No perdió la esperanza, ni siquiera al estar colgando en su cruz al lado de Jesús. ¡Grita ladrón, de la cruz! ¡No te desanimes! ¡Jesús, recuérdate de mí, cuando llegues a tu Reino!

35 Venerable John Henry Newman, (from Prayers, Poems, Meditations, SPCK, 1989, Holy Trinity Church, London, as found in the Magnificat Missalette, for April 2008, p. 54), states a general principle when he says: Gods presence is not discerned at the time when it is upon us, but afterward, when we look back upon what is gone and over.

36 Finalmente, el venerable John Henry Newman, (en Oraciones, Poesías, Meditaciones, SPCK, 1989, Iglesia de la Santa Trinidad, London, citado en el misalito Magnificat para abril, 2008, 54), dice que como principio general, la presencia de Dios no se discierne al momento que esta sobre nosotros, sino que después, cuando vemos hacia atrás sobre lo que ya sucedió y paso.

37 The disciples on the road to Emmaus did as much when they said: Was not our heart burning within us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures? (Luke 24:32). Yes. Thats how Jesus is to be found!

38 Los discípulos en el camino a Emaús hicieron esto cuando dijeron: ¿No ardían nuestros corazones dentro de nosotros en el camino, cuando Jesús nos abrió las escrituras (Lucas 24:32)? ¡Sí! ¡Así es como se encuentra Jesús!
