Then write today’s verb and draw a picture to help you remember the meaning of the verb. On the back side of the same index card, write the meaning of the verb in English. Write a sentence in Spanish saying….. “My friend’s parents divorced last year.”

8 Can you guess the infinitive? Here are some irregular preterite verb conjugations. Can you guess what verb they come from? (THINK: Do they look like a present tense conjugation of a familiar verb?) yo vine él estuvo nosotros trajimos ellos fueron

9 Irregular Preterite verb endings -e * -imos -iste X -o * -ieron They are basically the same preterite tense endings that we use for –ER/-IR verbs (*the Yo & Usted forms are different), but there are NO ACCENT MARKS!

10 So…How do I learn the irregular verbs in the preterite past tense? Learn them by their base forms first! Start with these five: Estar > estuv- Tener > tuv- Venir > vin- Poder > pud- Saber > sup-

11 Okay, now what?... Add the endings! Estar > estuv- *yo estuve tú estuviste *él estuvo nosotros estuvimos ellos estuvieron NOTE: the endings for most of the irregular preterite verbs are the preterite tense endings for –ER/-IR verbs (*except the Yo & Usted forms) and there are NO accent marks!

12 The verb HACER (to do / to make) The verb HACER (to do / to make) Hacer is just like the other irregular preterites, except it has an extra spelling change in the él, ella, Usted form to reflect the correct pronunciation. Hacer > hic- Yo hice Tú hiciste ** Él hizo** (the “c” changes to a “z”) Nosotros hicimos Ellos hicieron

13 There are 2 “sort of” irregulars: D AR – to give VER – to see DiDi Diste Dio Dimos Dieron ViVi Viste Vio Vimos Vieron NOTE: These 2 verbs use the EXACT same preterite tense endings for –ER/-IR verbs, except there are NO accent marks!

14 A couple of verbs have a different ending for the Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes form! TRAER > traj- (to bring) yo traje nosotros trajimos tú trajisteX él trajo **ellos trajeron** DECIR > dij- (to say / to tell) yo dije nosotros dijimos tú dijisteX él dijo **ellos dijeron** CONDUCIR > conduj- (to drive) yo conduje nosotros condujimos tú condujisteX él condujo **ellos condujeron** *NOTE: Preterites with “J” stems, omit the “i” in the Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes forms!
