2  Most mental processes involve or require a duration of time to complete.

3  Verbs that deal with mental activities or conditions that have occurred in the past are most often expressed in the imperfect tense.

4  The most common of these verbs include:  Creer  Querer  Desear  Tener ganas de (to feel like)  Sentir  Pensar  Preferir  Poder  Saber  Gustar

5  Yo _______ que sé pero no sé por qué, pero ellos ________ que no. (creer, creer) creía creían

6  Ella __________ lo mismo. (pensar) pensaba

7  Nosotros ____________ que ellos ___________ salir. (saber, preferir) sabíamos preferían

8  A sentence may have two or more verbs in the past.  These verbs may be in the same tense or in different tenses.

9  In the sentence given, both verbs are in the preterite tense.  Both describe simple actions that began and ended at a specific time in the past.  Laura llegó ayer y Pepe la vio.

10  In the example sentence, the two verbs are in the imperfect because they both describe habitual or continuous actions.  The moment when the actions began or eneded is unimportant.  Durante el invierno, Adela iba a las montañas a esquiar, pero yo trabajaba.

11  In this sentence, the verb estudiaba is in the imperfect; it describes the background – or what was going on.  The verb in the preterite, entró, expresses the action or event that interrupted the ongoing action.  Yo estudiaba cuando Julia entró
