1 Chapter 10: El pretérito versus El Imperfecto Ven Conmigo Level 2 May 10, 2013

2 El Pretérito -Actions that started in the past and ended in the past. -Actions that happened once or a specific number of times in the past. -2 or more actions in the same sentence: Series of consecutive events in the past or the Interruption of an (imperfect) action in progress

3 El Imperfecto - Repetitive action in past -Ongoing action in past -Age in the past -Time in the past -Descriptions/Setting the scene; (weather, time, etc.) -2 actions in the same sentence: Going on at the same time (imperfect – mientras in between) or being interrupted by the preterite.

4 Palabras indicadoras El Pretérito: -anoche -anteayer -la semana pasada -el año pasado -de repente -una vez -un día El Imperfecto: -cada día -siempre --frecuentemente -durante los veranos, fines de semana, etc. -muchas veces

5 Ejemplos del Pretérito- Tell me Why… 1. Yo fui al supermercado. (action started and completed in the past) 2. Una vez comimos en este restaurante. (past action happened once) 3. De repente, ocurrió un accidente. (one time event) 4. Yo estudiaba, cuando mi padre llamó por teléfono. (ongoing action in imperfect is interrupted by preterite)

6 Ejemplos del Imperfecto- Tell me why… 1. Cuando era niña, siempre contaba chistes. (ongoing, repetitive action.) 2. Hacía sol todo el día. (weather in the past.) 3. Yo bailaba mientras mi hermana cantaba. (2 past actions happening at the same time.) 4. Ellos tenían ocho años cuando vinieron aquí. (age in the past.)

7 Vamos a practicar – un cuento Ayer mientras Alondra y Sandra (1)______(esperar) a su amiga, vieron a Ryan Gosling. Ellas ______ (estar) en un restaurante en Hollywood cuando un hombre(2)_______ (entrar). El se sentó con otro hombre en una mesa cerca de mí.
