PRETERITO: Is used in the following situations:: 1-For actions that can be viewed as single events. Ej:: Anoche, mi amiga y yo fuimos al cine. 2-For actions that were repeated a specific number of times Ejemplo: Ayer, practiqué los verbos irregulares veinte veces 3-For actions that occurred during a specific period of time Ej: Susana estuvo en la casa por dos horas. 4-For actions that were part of a chain of events .Ej: Julia fue a la recepción, luego saludó a los novios y salió 5-To state the beginning or the end of an action… Ejemplo: La boda empezó a las seis IMPERFECTO: Is used in the following situations: 1-For habitual or ongoing actions in the past (USED TO) EJ: Ella solía(used to..) visitarme los veranos) 2-To express emotions and feelings in the past EJ: La princesa estaba enamorada del príncipe 3-To express age and time in the past Ej: Susana tenía doce años cuando llegó de Honduras 4-For narration or description the past Ej: Llovia mucho cuando empezó la boda 5-With ESTAR (GERUNDIO) Ej; Estábamos durmiendo cuando empezó la boda NOTA: Many actions depend on the speaker’s preference as wheather to use preterite or imperfect. Or the speaker can also choose to mix preterite and imperfect randomly.
