We’ve learned to use tener to express possession and to say what we have to do. The verb tener Tengo muchos libros. I have a lot of books. Tengo que irme. I have to go. There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿Tienes sed? Are you thirsty? Tengo frío. I’m cold. Tenemos prisa. We’re in a hurry. Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.

Tener... años ¿Cuántos años tienes? Yo tengo diecinueve años.

Tener calor ¡Uf! ¡Tengo mucho calor!
