Remember that tener is an irregular -er verb that is conjugated as follows: tengo tienes tiene tenemos tenéis tienen Notice the irregular yo form . . . . . . and the changes that occur in the stem of the second-person singular and third persons.

3 Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.
The verb tener We’ve learned to use tener to express possession and to say what we have to do. Tengo muchos amigos. I have a lot of friends. Tienes que asistir a clase. You have to attend class. There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿Tienes hambre? Are you hungry? No, pero tengo frío. No, but I’m cold. Tenemos prisa. We’re in a hurry. Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.
