2 Tener  In Spanish the verb tener means to have.  Example: Yo tengo un libro. I have a book.  We use tener “to have” to say how old someone is.  Example: Carlos tiene doce años (Carlos is 12 years old – literally “Carlos has 12 years”).  The verb tener is sometimes used to express how someone feels (not to be confused with estar).  There are specific TENER EXPRESSIONS
