3 In both English and Spanish… Affirmative commands are used to tell someone to do something! Use them with friends or family. Study the lesson! = ¡Estudia la lección! Learn Spanish! = ¡Aprende español! Write the letter! = ¡Escribe la carta! *

4 A FEW THINGS… In the USA, You will NOT use these commands with someone you’d use the Usted form with. It can be considered disrespectful. In Spanish-speaking countries, it is more common to use commands for simple tasks. If said politely, it is a direct statement, and not considered rude.

5 Here’s how. EXPLANATION: Regular affirmative tú commands use the él/ella/usted (third person singular) form in the present tense. Examples: InfinitivePresent TenseAffirmative Tú Command estudiar=? hablar=? estudia habla ¡Estudia! ¡Habla! aprender=? correr=? aprende corre ¡Aprende! ¡Corre! escribir=? Subir=? escribe sube ¡Escribe! ¡Sube!

6 Let’s try a few easy ones!  Speak Spanish! =¡Habla español!  Listen! =¡Escucha!  Write! =¡Escribe!  Buy the balloons! =¡Compra los globos!

7 Affirmative Tú Commands  Some verbs have irregular affirmative tú commands.  To form many of these commands, take the yo form of the present tense and drop the -go:

8 Affirmative Tú Commands  Poner (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Pongo  Command form?  Pon

9 Tener (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Tengo  Command form?  Ten

10 Decir (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Digo  Command form?  Di

11 Salir (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Salgo  Command form?  Sal

12 Venir (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Vengo  Command form?  Ven

13 IRREGULARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Hacer, Ser, and Ir have irregular tú command forms that must be memorized: Hacer=haz Ser=sé IR=ve

14 These are the irregular commands. Can you think of a good way to memorize how these are the irregular ones?  D (decir) =di  H (hacer) =haz  I (ir) =ve  P (poner) =pon  S (salir) = sal  S (ser) =sé  T (tener) =ten  V (venir) =ven di haz ve pon sal sé ten ven cha-cha-cha

15 Try forming these with the irregulars!  ¿Puedes decir? Do the homework! Be nice! Leave! Go to the office! Have patience! (paciencia) Tell the truth! (la verdad)

16 Can you say these in English?  ¿Puedes decir? ¡Abre la ventana! ¡Lava los platos! ¡Pon las decoraciones!

17 Write the affirmative tú command for each of the following -ar verbs. 1. bailar=baila 2. cantar=canta 3. cerrar=cierra 4. decorar=decora 5. jugar=juega 6. llegar=llega 7. llevar=lleva 8. almorzar=almuerza 9. escuchar=escucha 10. celebrar=celebra on your own first!

18 Write the affirmative tú command for each of the following -er verbs. 1. aprender=aprende 2. barrer=barre 3. beber=bebe 4. comer=come 5. correr=corre 6. querer=quiere 7. traer=trae 8. vender=vende 9. volver=vuelve

21 Change each infinitive phrase to an affirmative tú command. Modelo: lavar los platos=Lava los platos, por favor. 1. sacar tus apuntes =Saca tus apuntes, por favor. 2. dar el regalo=Da el regalo, por favor. 3. servir el pastel=Sirve el pastel, por favor. 4. cerrar la puerta=Cierra la puerta, por favor. 5. poner las decoraciones=Pon las decoraciones, por favor. 6. llegar temprano=Llega temprano, por favor. 7. aprender español=Aprende español, por favor. 8. beber el jugo=Bebe el jugo, por favor.
