1. Gustar/Encantar/Chocar
*The verb GUSTAR literally means to be pleasing (to someone). *The verb ENCANTAR means to please, make happy, delight (someone) *The verb CHOCAR means to be displeasing, bothersome, annoying (to someone)

*Generally we use GUSTAR to say that we like something. *When using the verbs Gustar, Encantar, and Chocar, you should know it only has 2 forms: GUSTA and GUSTAN Encanta Encantan Choca Chocan

3. Gusta/Encanta/Choca *Use gusta, encanta, and choca with singular nouns. Por ejemplo: A ti te gusta (encanta, choca) la clase de arte.

*Use gustan, encantan, and chocan with plural nouns. Por ejemplo: A ti te gustan (encantan, chocan) las clases de música.

*It is important to realize that the form of the verb GUSTAR you use depends on the object of the verb and NOT the subject (person). Por ejemplo: A mi me gustan las ensaladas. A ellos les gusta el jamón.

*One important word to remember to include before each and every person’s name is A which means to Por ejemplo: A Juan le gusta el cereal. (Cereal is pleasing TO Juan) A Fernando y a mí nos gusta el cereal también. (Cereal is pleasing TO Fernando and TO me also.)

7. ¿Qué te gusta? Now let’s look at how you would say various things are pleasing to different people… Who is it pleasing to? A mí me gusta A ti te gusta A Ud. le gusta A ella le gusta A él le gusta To me To you To you (form.) To her To him Who is it pleasing to? 7. ¿Qué te gusta? cont… Be sure to write out what each one means. This chart will help you when I ask you to clarify who the person is that the object is pleasing to. So, that means that you will be sure to include the words A + Ud/ella/él/Uds/ellos/ellas . Clarification is really only needed when you are using the words “le” and “les” because these pronouns can represent several different people.

8. ¿Qué te gusta hacer? Por ejemplo:
Not only can you use gustar to talk about objects that you like, but you may also use gustar to talk about actions (verbs) that you like to do. ¿Qué te gusta hacer? = What do you like to do? *Remember that when you ask/answer a question like that, you DO NOT CONJUGATE THE ACTION VERBS! Por ejemplo: A nosotros nos gusta pescar. We like to fish. A mi familia le gusta cenar en un restaurante. My family likes to have dinner in a restaurant. I like to listen to music. Me gusta escuchar música.

9. I don’t like to… Por ejemplo: A Ricardo no le gusta la ensalada. OR
Now that you know how to say that you like certain objects and actions, do you know how to say that you don’t like something? What’s important is the placement of the word no. Por ejemplo: A Ricardo no le gusta la ensalada. OR No le gusta la ensalada.

10. One final thing… If you want to ask someone if they like something in Spanish, you can do so by simply adding question marks. Por ejemplo: You like sports. = Te gustan los deportes. Do you like sports? = ¿Te gustan los deportes? (Notice that the word “do” or “does” is implied in the question.)
