2 Rickover Naval Academy Teachers Staying After School 1.Every day generally at least one teacher from every subject is here after school for at least one hour, usually longer, so even if your teacher is not there, another teacher who teaches the same subject will generally be there to answer questions. 2.Students can always talk with a teacher to arrange with them to meet before school or stay after school. It may not be the same day, but all teachers do make appointments for either before school or after school.

4 Rickover Naval Academy CPS Service Learning Hours Requirements 1. All CPS students are required to complete two Community Service/Service Learning projects. 2. The first project will take place during their Freshman or Sophomore year in a class. The second will take place their Junior year in Civics. 3. It is a good idea to try to do 100 hours or more by Senior year to help qualify for extra college scholarship dollars.

5 Rickover Naval Academy Rickover Honors Level Policy 1.In the four core subjects students will be placed in an honors level class based on the NWEA scores. 2.If a student in a regular level class receives an A for the semester, and there is room in the honors level class, then they may be moved up to the honors level. 3.If a student receives a D in the honors class for 2 consecutive semesters then they will automatically be dropped to regular level. 4.If a student receives an F in any one semester they will automatically be dropped to regular level. 4.

6 Communication Leads to Success One of the best ways that parents can help their children succeed in school is to be involved with their education. This starts with communicating well with your child's teacher. Basically, good communication involves meeting with the teacher, being a positive and courteous partner in your child's learning, and keeping the lines of communication open in various ways throughout the year. 7 Written Communication Write short notes and follow up. If you want a quick response to a question: Send a brief written note or an email message to the teacher with your question clearly stated. Be aware that teachers get many email messages - and have many other responsibilities during their day--and may not be able to respond immediately to yours. 8 Tips For A Successful First Year Check your child’s planner nightly. Ask a question about where they are in completing assignments; ask which assignment they will be most successful on; ask to see their work Provide a quiet space and/or a dedicated space for your child to do their work. Set up a space at a desk, the kitchen table, a coffee table (make sure the TV is off) Help your child prioritize projects. Have your child determine which is due first, which will take longest to complete Have your child pack backpack at night. 9 Check parent portal weekly. Set aside time to celebrate successful grades and trouble shoot areas for concentration, make a plan together. Take cellphones away at bedtime. Research indicates that sleep without interruption impacts student focus and health in school. DO NOT allow your child to block you from social media; ie, Facebook. We have parents that miss warning signs and it is often too late to prevent unhealthy choices. If you notice your child is withdrawn, isolating themselves, or not doing what they normally do, contact someone at the school for help- we are partners in raising successful, healthy children. 10 Rickover Naval Academy Attendance We pride ourselves on high attendance and we need all of you here, on time every day. Late to school begins at 0810. Best Practice: Call in the day of the absence and send a note when they return. Note may be written in the parents’ native language. Required: We must have the note to make an absence excused Unexcused Absence: May result in a detention

11 Rickover Naval Academy Absolute Students are NOT to have cell phones visible in the classroom during instructional time. If a student has his or her cell phone out, the teacher will give one warning to turn off and put the phone away. After said warning, if seen or heard again, the teacher will take the phone, bag the phone in a padded envelope, fill out the confiscation form, and call the security guard on duty, who will give the bagged phone and form to Chief Thompson. The student’s parent or guardian will come to retrieve the phone on one morning from 7:30 - 8:00 am or one afternoon from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. This will begin the week of September 19. If a student refuses to give the phone to the teacher, the teacher will write the student up. The discipline referral process will be used. The Dean will assign a more severe punishment.

12 Rickover Naval Academy Rickover Freshman Summer Programs This summer the Counselors will be running a 4 day/ 4 hours per day program for the incoming freshmen class that will introduce and prepare freshmen to be successful in high school. The program will tentatively run Monday through Friday, the week of August 15 th - August 18 th, 2016 and meet from 8:30am – 12:30 pm (o830 – 1230). NJROTC Orientation: This will help prepare cadets for the military aspect of the school. August 22 – August 25, 2016

13 Volunteering for Rickover We can use help in many ways. Some help is with time and some help is with funds.
