2 REPORTED SPEECH Se usa para contar lo que alguien ha dicho sin repetir las palabras exactas: ‘I work here’, she said. (Estilo directo) She said (that) she worked there. (Estilo indirecto)

3 REPORTED SPEECH (1) STATEMENTS
La frase se suele introducir con los verbos ‘say’ y ‘tell’. No hay comillas Los verbos cambian al pasado Los pronombres y adjetivos posesivos cambian lógicamente (normalmente de la 1ª y 2ª persona a la 3ª), excepto cuando el hablante cuenta lo que él dijo. El pronombre ‘you’ cambia a ‘I’ o ‘we’. Las palabras que indican lugar y tiempo deben cambiar lógicamente

4 REPORTED SPEECH Diana said, ‘I’m looking for my bag’
STATEMENTS Diana said, ‘I’m looking for my bag’ Diana said (that) she was looking for her bag

5 REPORTED SPEECH Fiona said to Jim, ‘We like your new jeans’.
STATEMENTS Fiona said to Jim, ‘We like your new jeans’. Fiona said to Jim (that) they liked his new jeans. (told)

6 REPORTED SPEECH Cuando el verbo introductor está en pasado (said, told, …) se producen los siguientes cambios en los tiempos: PRESENT SIMPLE PAST SIMPLE ‘I play chess.’ She said (that) she played chess. PRESENT CONTINUOUS PAST CONTINUOUS ‘I’m playing chess.’ She said (that) she was playing chess. PRESENT PERFECT PAST PERFECT ‘I have played chess.’ She said (that) she had played chess. PAST SIMPLE PAST PERFECT ‘I played chess’. She said (that) she had played chess. FUTURE SIMPLE PRESENT CONDITIONAL ‘I will play chess” She said (that) she would play chess Can could Must / have to must / had to May might

11 REPORTED SPEECH (2) QUESTIONS
Una pregunta deja de serlo y se convierte en una frase. No hay comillas ni signo de interrogación ni inversión de sujeto y verbo. Detrás del verbo introductor (ask, …) aparecen ‘if’ (whether) o ‘question word’ (what, who, …) .

12 REPORTED SPEECH QUESTIONS ‘Do you like fast food?’ Tom said to Mary.
Tom asked Mary if she liked fast food.

13 REPORTED SPEECH QUESTIONS
‘Where did you meet your boyfriend?’ Paul said to Sally. Paul asked Sally where she had met her boyfriend.

14 Write the sentences below in reported speech:
‘Have you finished your homework?’, Ben said to Terry. Ben asked Terry if he had finished his homework. ‘Why are you so sad today?’ Diana said to Helen. Diana asked Helen why she was so sad that day. ‘When will you listen to me carefully?’ Jane said to her daughter. Jane asked her daughter when she would listen to her carefully.

15 REPORTED SPEECH (3) COMMANDS and REQUESTS
Se emplea un verbo introductor que exprese mandato (tell, ask, order, …). El imperativo pasa a infinitivo. Al traducir las ideas en estilo indirecto usamos el subjuntivo.

18 Write the sentences below in reported speech:
‘Stand up’, the policeman said to the thief. The policeman told the thief to stand up. ‘Don’t open your books’, the teacher said to the students. The teacher told the students not to open their books. ‘Don’t close your eyes and pay attention’, the magician said to the boy. The magician told the boy not to close his eyes and to pay attention.
