4 LIMITS OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH include: 1. DEFAMATION = A LIE ABOUT SOMEONE THAT DAMAGES THEIR REPUTATION. 2. Slander = spoken defamation 3. Libel = written defamation

5 LIMITS OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH include: 4. HATE SPEECH – speaking against someone based on their race, gender, or sexual orientation 5. FIGHTING WORDS – words spoken face to face that would cause a reasonable person to fight

6 6. OBSCENITY= if the average person using contemporary local standards would say – “this is inappropriate” about sex or nudity 7. It is not true because what John Brown said is libel (written defamation)

7 LIMITS OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH include: HATE SPEECH = insults to people based on their race, gender, or sexual orientation FIGHTING WORDS = words spoken face to face that cause a fight among reasonable people
