Spend about 5 minutes practising them with gestures both receptively and actively i.e. you do the gesture and the whole class says the verb to check their comprehension. You can point also to the pictures to elicit the infinitives. (with sacar, montar and tomar it is worth making a point about literal and non-literal translations and the fact that you don’t say things in exactly the same way – one reason for learning language in context) Then make it clear you are going to focus ‘en el pasado’ and present the language in the ‘yo’ form with rest of the sentence e.g. nade en el mar, tome el sol. Get the class to identify by letter which phrases you are doing. mandar descansar

3 V W X Y C Z U R J Using just the ‘yo’ preterit form of verb only – play beat the teacher (the ‘silence’ game) up to five points. The class has had quite a bit of exposure to the infinitive verbs and this should be good oral practice of the preterit forms.

1. Mime the whole phrase and get the class to tell you the letter Say ½ phrase out loud (e.g. ______ en el mar) and get the class to fill in the other half – this works well both ways round i.e. you start nade and they finish ‘en el mar’ Listen in especially hard for those that they are not remembering or having difficulty saying e.g. descansar will slip from memories, as will mandar mensajes. Focus for a few minutes on just the more difficult ones.

Make sure you keep it clear in their minds that this is for saying ‘I’ in the part and present. You will need to explain the reason for change of spelling for ‘jugar’ and ‘sacar’ but make it clear this is just a spelling change – the sounds are all regular!!!!! Get them to write the table down and then check that they are still all happy with the verb meanings. 6 5 2 12 15 10 6 Maths and Spanish. For plenary, give them 7 maths questions. For example, you say: Nade en el mar, monte en bici, jugue al voleibol and pupils need to do the sum = 15. Make sure you do your 7 questions in advance!
