2 Stem-Changing verbs So far, we’ve learned several stem-changing verbs. Tener (to have) and Venir (to come to an event/place) are two examples of these verbs. In both of these verbs, the E in the stem changes to IE in all forms but nosotros and vosotros.

3 What is it? Again, a stem-changing verb is a verb that has the typical endings of the verb ending. All the endings of tener and venir correspond to what should end an –er or an –ir verb. ( Well, except for yo…) What IS different is that when you take the ar/er/ir ending off the verb, the remaining stem undergoes a change BEFORE conjugation.

5 Poder (o  ue) Poder is an er verb. Before conjugation, the o in the stem (POD-) changes to ue in every form except nosotros and vosotros.

7 REMEMBER Poder is practically always followed by an infinitive. Just remember you are saying “ Can … ” or “ May … ”? So, you’re including the infinitive to complete the information. Ex: May I GO to the bathroom? ¿Puedo ir al baño?
