Flamenco is a style of music that involves singing, playing of a stringed instrument, dance, and clapping. It is a folk art and culture of Spain that is around 500 years old. Mubashira 2

It is believed that Flamenco originated in Andalusia in Southern Spain. The term “Flamenco” was used in the 18th century AD and is derived from the spanish word “Flama” and “enco” or “Endo” which means “having the quality of fire. Mubashira 3

Gitanos. Moros. Andaluces. Judios. La Gente Pobre Café Cantantes The music came from a combination of four types of people. The gypsies, the Moors, the indigenous Andalusians, and the Jews. It was more common amongst the poor people. All these people were persecuted and they just wanted an escape from that. Then, in the 19th Century, these things called “café cantantes” popped up all over Southern Spain and went as far as Madrid. Through these, Flameco became popular amongst the general public. The groups that played in the café cantantes consisted of 1-2 singers, 2-3 female dancers and 2 male dancers and 2 guitarists. These cafes also heightened the importance of guitars and guitarists in Flamenco. Café cantantes declined in the 20th century and Flameco died out around 1940s because War but then Flamenco came booming back in the 50s with Tablaos (places where flamenco is performed). 4 Mubashira

Flamenco Nuevo In Flamenco puro, the dancer dances alone and does not use props. It is all improvisation. Classical is very similar to ballet. The women have this signature back bend. These dances do not use props. Many dancers hit their prime at 30s and go into their 50s. 8 Mubashira

9 Baile 10 Modern flamenco uses very fast footwork and the dancers are very highly trained. Super choreographed and use castanets and “castañuelas” and fans “Abanico Flamenco” or the shawl known as the “manacillo” or “chal” They can start early, although in traditional flamenco, the young ones are thought to not have enough soul and passion or maturity for the dance. Flamenco nuevo is a new style of flamenco that does not usually use props, the dancers are dressed plainly, and they incorporate other forms of dance. Castanetes “castañuelas” are not an actual part of Flamenco; they are an element that has been added to enhance the finger snapping. Mubashira 11 12
