1 LEARN HOW TO SAY WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW The Present Progressive

2 Purpose: to say what is happening right now To form the present progressive, use a CONJUGATED form of “estar” (andar, ir, seguir, venir) with the present participle. Form the present participle by replacing the “ar/er/ir” ending with:  -ando (-ar verbs)  -iendo (er/ir verbs)

3 Examples 1st step: Determine your subject and conjugate estar to say “is” The chicken is:El pollo está 2nd step: Determine the verb (the thing that is happening right now) volar (to fly) 3rd step: add present participle ending: volar  vol  volando

4 The chicken is flying Present progressive El pollo está volando. Tadaaa!

5 Let’s practice Kathy will be cleaning. (limpiar)  Kathy estará limpiando. Jerry was studying. (estudiar)  Jerry estaba estudiando. Hannah is singing. (cantar)  Hannah está cantando.

6 More practice We were washing the car.  Nosotros estábamos lavando el carro. They will be talking.  Ellos estarán hablando. You are working too much (demasiado).  Tú estás trabajando demasiado.

7 WHEN THE STEM OF AN –ER / -IR VERB ENDS IN VOWEL: LEER  LE OÍR  O TRAER  TRA If you have a vowel left after dropping the –er/-ir ending

8 INSTEAD ADD “YENDO” LEER  LE  LEYENDO OÍR  O  OYENDO TRAER  TRA  TRAYENDO “MI ABUELA ESTÁ LEYENDO” You cannot add “iendo”

9 REIR  RIENDO SONREIR  SONRIENDO “MI ABUELA ESTÁ SONRIENDO” Watch out for…

10 Only do stem-change in “IR” verbs Present Tense changes Dormir (ue) Pedir (i) Servir (i) Venir (ie) Present Progressive O  U E  I Juan está durmiendo *DO change in nosotros too!!!! *

11 Practice El gato/dormir El perro/comer Nosotros/leer Ellos/servir la comida Yo/estudiar Mi profesora/escribir Juan/leer el libro Mi amiga/dormir en la clase Mis vecinos (neighbors)/tener una fiesta
