3 Hispanic Heritage Month is a time between September 15 and October 15 where Americans celebrate the contributions of Latin Americans and their descendants. This month of celebration first began when President Lyndon Johnson approved Hispanic Heritage week. President Ronald Reagan later enlarged it to cover 30 days.

11 Interviewees Name: Nelida FelicianoDate of Interview: Octubre 5, 2011  Juan: ¿Naciste en los Estados Unidos?  Nelida: No.  Juan: ¿Porque ingreso a los Estados Unidos?  Nelida: Llegue de pequena con mi mama a vivir a los Estados Unidos.  Juan: ¿Que tipo de musica se escucha su cultura?  Nelida: Mucha salsa, mucho merengue.  Juan: What types and kinds of foods do you eat?  Nelida: Lot of rice, lot of porks, and a lot vegetables.  Juan: Do you have family in American, another country, or both?  Nelida: Both.

12  Juan: Do you think the president is doing a good job?  Nelida: I think he is manageable at making better changes to better our future and this country.  Juan: What do you think about the education in the U.S.?  Nelida: The eduaction is where to each children’s standards are capable of doing their best whether in a public school or regular school or catholic school. It’s all up to the student.  Juan: What religion do you practice?  Nelida: Me and my family practice the catholic religion?

13  From this interview I learned that Nelida Feliciano was not born here in the United States and that she had moved here with her mother from Puerto Rico to live in the United States. Her culture listens to a lot of salsa and merengue and they love to eat pork.

14  Latino Population in Jersey City: 68,256 = 27.5% total population.  Latino Population in New Jersey: 1,117,191 = 13.3% total population.  Latino Population in the United States: 35, 305, 818 = 12.5% total population.

15  Block 1 – Teacher: Mrs. Ramos There is a total of 5 Hispanic students in my first block out of 14. The percentage is 36%.  Block 2 – Teacher: Mrs. Eldredge There is a total of 13 Hispanics in my second block out of 24. The percentage is 54%.  Block 3 – Teacher: Mr. Lamb There is a total of 5 Hispanics in my third block out of 7. The percentage is 71%.  Block 4 – Teacher: Mr. Signoretta There is a total of 7 Hispanics in my fourth block out of 17. The percentage is 41%.
