My great great grandmother María Dolores Quintana was born about 1846 in Tesuque, New México.  She came with the priests from Tesuque to Peñasco as a cook.  Her children were baptized and married at La Misión de San Lorenzo de Picuries or La Iglesia Católica de San Antonio de Peñasco and identified as "hijos naturales."  Picuries and Peñasco are in Taos County, New México. According to my mother, Maria Dolores was a mistress of four men.  She was kidnapped, rescued and physically mutilated.  According to my cousins descended from her daughter, María Antonia, María Dolores was raped by an Apache.  Stanley & Yolanda Lucero:

As the youngest of thirteen children born to Mexican immigrant parents, Hinojosa grew up listening to traditional Mexican songs as well as the pop and folk stations of the 60s on her parents’ radio. Some of those had been the plan­ta­tion own­ers, some shame­fully had been held as enslaved workers. Every evening my grand­mother and I sat on the porch to wait for the sun­set. As we watched the bats come out from their den in the ceil­ing, and fly into the dark­en­ing sky, I lis­tened to her sto­ries of the strug­gle for free­dom, equal­ity and jus­tice that had been car­ried on by peo­ple who lived in that same house, who per­haps had con­spired on that same porch. Over the past thirty years, she has conducted studies of second language learners in school settings. Her most recent study is of the language resources of Alaskan Native children in several Yup’ik villages along the Yukon River. The Purépecha language is spoken by nearly 200,000 people in Michoacán. Following Mexico's 2000 indigenous language law, indigenous languages, including Purépecha were granted equal official status as Spanish in the areas where they are spoken. Recently, educational instruction in the language has been introduced the local school systems. Additionally, many Purépecha communities offer classes and lessons of the language. Territory: Cheran, Michoacan and in pre-colonial times, the Purépechas (more commonly known as the Tarascans) occupied most of the state of Michoacan, but they also occupied some of the lower valleys of both Guanajuato and Jalisco. Celaya, Acámbaro, and Yurirapúndaro were all in Tarascan territory. They appeared in the mid-'70s documentary Chulas Fronteras, and are hosts of a long-running weekly radio program on Piedras Negras XEMU. They first recorded for Arhoolie Records in the early '70s, and their 2001 Arhoolie album Trovadores de la Frontera focuses on material from their stomping grounds of Nuevo Laredo and Piedras Negras. His father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Guerrero left his hometown to pursue his dream in music. He says that he gives his mother all the credit for his musical talent, and Guerrero said she taught him to "embrace the spirit of being Chicano".[2] Guerrero, in time exceeded even his wildest dreams as a musician, writer and performer for more than six decades, gaining worldwide recognition as the father of "Chicano Music". In the early 1700s Apache raided from the north, deadly diseases traveled from Mexico, and drought lingered. Survival lay in the missions. By entering a mission, they foreswore their traditional life to become Spanish, accepting a new religion and pledging fealty to a distant and unseen king. Did You Know that the four churches within San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are active Catholic parish churches? While they have not been in continuous operation since established in the early 1700s, many parishioners today are direct descendants of the mission Indians who built the churches.
