El pretérito The preterite is one Spanish equivalent of the past tense in English. (Up to now, we have been speaking only in the present tense.) The preterite expresses what someone did do. It is often compared to the “ed” form of the verb in English. It is used to express an action or event that began and ended at a specific time in the past. Similarly to the present tense, the preterite is conjugated by dropping the ar, er, or ir from a verb and adding the preterite endings. *****There are NO boot verbs in the preterite*****

There are three types of –AR verbs that are regular in every form of the preterite EXCEPT the yo form. These are called the CAR-GAR-ZAR verbs because they end with –CAR, -GAR, or –ZAR. 22 Los verbos IY en el pretérito
There are also some verbs where the “i” in the preterite ending changes to y in the él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms. This change is for spelling and pronunciation purposes. Note that this verbs also have added accents in other forms.
