Gender and Number Agreement Using adjectives properly!

Gender and Words   In Spanish, every noun has an inherent gender.   This means that every noun is either: Male OR Female  Inherent: involved in the constitution or essential character of something belonging by nature or habit  It is ALL about the noun. The gender belongs to the noun, and everything else has to fit that.

The Logic of Gender  What a word means doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with what its gender is. For example, the word “la corbata” is a feminine word, but it means “tie” (like a neck tie). “El vestido” is a masculine word, but it means “dress.” For example, the word “la corbata” is a feminine word, but it means “tie” (like a neck tie). “El vestido” is a masculine word, but it means “dress.”  Look at the following two words. Which one do you think is masculine (male) and which one do you think is feminine (female)? El Chico El Chico La Chica La Chica

So. Let’s look at the rules.  The rules are not always right, but there are three MAIN rules that we can follow: Most Spanish nouns ending in ‘o’ as masculine. Most Spanish nouns ending in ‘o’ as masculine. Most Spanish nouns ending in ‘a’ are feminine. Most Spanish nouns ending in ‘a’ are feminine. Spanish nouns that end in ‘e’ or in a consonant are both masculine and feminine. Spanish nouns that end in ‘e’ or in a consonant are both masculine and feminine.

Identify the following words as either masculine (m) or feminine (f):  La chica (The girl)  El chico (The boy)  La maestra (The teacher)  El maestro (The teacher)  La estudiante (The student)  El estudiante (The student) Notice that when a word ends in –e, it can be either masculine or feminine. The “el” or “la” shows which one it is.

Making Adjectives Match  Adjectives don’t have an inherent gender like nouns do.  This means that we change adjectives to match the gender of the nouns they are describing.  Look at the following example: La chica es artística La chica es artística El chico es artístico El chico es artístico

New Vocabulary  El/la estudiante: Student Student  La maestra: Teacher Teacher  El amigo: Friend Friend  La chica: Girl Girl  El chico: Boy Boy

Practice Which adjective goes with each person?  El chico AltoAlta  La mujer BonitoBonita  La persona Delgado Delgada  El estudiante PerezosoPerezosa  La maestra BajoBaja

The case of “Trabajador”  Trabajador Masculine Masculine  Trabajadora Feminine Feminine

Number Agreement  Besides matching in gender, adjectives need to match their nouns in number too.  Example: Los chicos son guapos. Los chicos son guapos.  Rule: To make an adjective plural, add –s if it ends in a vowel; add –es if it ends in a consonant. Examples: Examples: Las chicas trabajadorasLas chicas trabajadoras Los chicos trabajadoresLos chicos trabajadores

Practice  Which adjective goes with these people? Unos maestros Unos maestros ArtísticosArtísticas Unas estudiantes Unas estudiantes CansadosCansadas Unas chicas Unas chicas FeosFeas unos amigos unos amigos MorenosMorenas unas estudiantes unas estudiantes MalosMalas
