1 Workshop de Aplicaciones Clínicas Nivel 1 Kinesiología 2010
Welcome This is the SpiderTech basic introductory application and theory course. Distributed by

2 Kinesiology Tape diseñado y Pre-Cortado listo para aplicar.
Fabricado profesionalmente Tape Kinesiológico Original Japónes de Nitto Denko. What Spider Tech is? U$ annual en ventas Well Spider Tech is basically Kinesiology tape that is predesigned and ready to apply. Therefore, requiring no cutting. And what you’ll see is there are significant advantages when utilizing this form of therapy in a precut manner. (ask the audience) “Can I see a show of hands for those that are already familiar with utilizing Kinesiology taping in practice? Okay, we will highlight what the characteristics of Kinesiology taping are to make sure everybody has a clear understanding of what kinesiology taping is.” SpiderTech™ was designed to be a synergistic and complimentary addition to any form of patient centered care regardless of the practitioners professional designation. For a long time, taping has been widely used in the field of therapy and rehabilitation as both a means of treatment and prevention of sports-related injuries © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

All Kinesiology taping is, is tape that utilizes a light cotton material that is flexible and breathable and manufactured to be the same weight and thickness as human skin. The tape uses a 100% acrylic glue which is hypoallergenic. All of this allows the tape to be applied on the skin for multiple days. And that is one of the main benefits of this type of therapy is that it can be applied for multiple days continuously. The tape is water resistant and breathable and can therefore allow the person to wear it during strenuous exercise, during bathing, and regular daily activities. Kinesiology taping comes in four main colors. Black, blue, pink, and beige. All SpiderTech™ Applications and Tape are intended to be worn for up to five (5) days. Due to the special ‘wave’ characteristics of the material, activities of daily life such as sports and leisure are unrestricted but supported by the application of the SpiderTech products. The nature of the applications allows the user to shower or bath without having to change the support. The use of kinesiology tape in its original roll format has provided impressive clinical results treating muscle injuries, joint strains, neurological patients and both conservative and post-surgical rehabilitation for almost three decades. The popularity of this technology reached a pinnacle with the exposure of so many of the 2008 Beijing Olympic athletes wearing it during the games. SpiderTech™ is the evolution of this clinically proven therapy with the development of pre-engineered therapeutic applications which require no cutting. Now since the Beijing Olympics, this form of therapy has become very popular. And there are a lot of new suppliers on the market with different brands of Kinesiology taping. What you need to keep in mind is that since the tape is applied directly to your clients skin it becomes an extension of your reputation. You want to use the highest quality material to limit irritation and allow the tape to be applied for the intended time frame. Not all of the products on the market are created in the same way and the quality varies significantly. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

6 Porque Pre-Cortados? Why precuts? Well, this picture is very important in that it shows a couple of pro-cyclists, this was at the Tour of Missouri, and this is Thor Hushoff wearing the upper knee Spider. And in this environment, the therapist had to apply taping applications to 15 or 20 riders before every race. Well, if they were trying to do that with a roll of tape they would still be there cutting and trying to apply. They never would have been able to achieve treating that many people in that timeframe. They had to be as effective as possible but as efficient as possible. The traditional roll form of application imposed barriers for the general practitioner base to incorporate kinesiology taping into their practice. It is not that it has to be one or the other, rolls or pre-cuts, but pre-cuts create a significant advancement for expanded use in the management of today’s most common conditions. “what other environment do you need to be as effective and efficient as possible?” © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

8 Ventajas de Aplicaciones Pre-Cortadas
Fácil de Usar Ahorra Tiempo Estandarizado Reproducible Las Aplicaciones duran más Tiempo Aplicar fuera de ambientes Clinicos. The precuts have certain advantages over the rolls of tape that include the obvious on the top line in that they’re simply easier to use and they save time when using them in practice. We’re in a time is money industry. And to be as efficient as possible and effective as possible, is crucial for how well you manage your patient’s care. Plus the applications are standardized. They’re going to allow you to reproduce your results on a consistent basis. So now when a patient comes into you and says ‘oh my shoulder felt great with taping, can you redo that?’ You don’t have to look at the roll of tape and wonder what you did last time. You’re able to take the application out of the packaging and reproduce your results. Other members of your clinic are able to reproduce those results as well. And in the court of science, being able to do the research and get the validity within the insurance and scientific realm, will only be achieved with products that offer standardization. The applications also stay on longer because they are machine engineered. No matter how good you are with a pair of scissors, you would never be able to cut edges like this. And typically where you cut with scissors, is where the edges start to fray and that’s where the applications start to peel. With perfectly rounded corners like this from a manufacturing perspective, it allows the applications to stay on longer. The applications are also made out of one large continuous piece. And you therefore do not have tape overlapping tape. The tape adhesive is not designed to end on tape. It’s designed to end on skin. There is also a functional advantage to the precuts because they are made out of one continuous piece. That one portion of the precut and how it works, directly influences all of the other portions of the same application. And that is very similar to the way that the human fascial system works. So if you think of the low back one, if you go and bend forward and over to the side and it pulls on one half of the application, it’s going to pull on the other half in a very similar way to your fascial system. And if you have two individual cut pieces, you will not get that effect. Another advantage of a precut line, especially because the instructions come within the packaging, is it does give you the ability to have your patients self-administer when their treatment plan calls for it. Sometimes it’s not easy to get into the healthcare professional. Sometimes the patients plan of management dictates that they don’t need to see you as frequently but they still need a level of support in which Kinesiology taping can offer. And therefore having a standardized easy to apply, instructions that you can follow format, allows them to do so. Because if you gave them a roll of tape and instructed them how to cut and apply, you’re only going to end up with disappointment for both you and the patient. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

12 Nocicepción Nociception. What do you think nociception is? Ask the audience what they feel nociception is? Then, ask the audience to raise their hands if they think nociception is pain. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

13 Nocicepción NOCICEPCIÓN NOCICEPTORES
Inconsciente la transmisión aferente de estímulos aberrantes desde el punto de origen para el Sistema Nervioso Central NOCICEPTORES Las células que detectan los estímulos nocivos (tisular real o potencial de daño) Nociception is often misunderstood as being pain. It is involved with the ultimate perception of pain but nociception itself is not pain. Nociception is the transmission of noxious stimuli from the point of origin to the central nervous system and nociceptors are cells that sense noxious stimuli whether it is actual or potential tissue damage. Key point: Nociceptors = specific sensors that exist for noxious or potentially noxious stimuli Nociception = the transmission of noxious stimuli from the peripheral point of origin to the CNS A nociceptive neuron is a receptor that is preferentially sensitive to a noxious stimuli or to a stimulus that could become noxious if prolonged. When activated, nociceptive neurons transmit noxious signals centrally and to higher brain centers. Nociceptive neurons are located in every tissue except the brain, cartilage and cortical bone. When activated by mechanical, thermal, and chemical stimuli, nociceptors conduct afferent impulses toward the spinal cord via A-delta and C fibers. The activity in the nociceptive neurons is called nociception. The cell body of a nociceptive neuron is in the dorsal root ganglion near the spinal cord. Nociceptors are sensitive to chemical, thermal and mechanical irritation. One of the most common neuropeptides released, once a nociceptor is stimulated, is substance P which then initiates the electrical impulses along the afferent fibre toward the spinal cord. There is sharp fast pain and slower pain. We are more concerned with the slow type of pain. Slow pain is an aching, throbbing, or burning sensation that is poorly localized and less specifically related to the stimulus. There is a delay in the perception of slow pain following injury, but the pain will continue long after the noxious stimulus is removed. Fast pain is transmitted by A-delta fibres and slow pain is transmitted by the C-fibres and originates from both superficial tissue (skin, terminating in Merkels discs in the touch domes) and deeper tissue (ligaments and muscle). The peripheral terminal ends of nociceptive pathways are called free nerve endings. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

14 PORQUÉ ES ESTO IMPORTANTE?
Why is this important to know? There are so many differences that can show up in clinical practice with the ultimate perception of pain that as a treating therapist we need to understand that the perception of pain is different for different individuals and that there are many different factors involved with it and that nociception itself is not pain and that’s important because there are many different ingredients when combined together to give the clinical presentation of pain that varies depending on the individual and that the same conditions can give very different clinical presentations for different people and this is important because we’re ultimately treating pain with the tape and we need to know as we do with any condition and any treatment that pain is not like a light switch. We ultimately are trying to therapeutically treat nociception to have a larger effect on the treatment of pain. The understanding and the differentiation of the origin and effects of nociception gives us greater understanding of the limitations of some of our treatments including taping. It helps to clarify the most effective clinical protocols. It is important to know, pain isn’t like a light switch, it doesn’t just get flipped on and off. There are many different factors involved including previous experience with pain, so if I was walking out of here and fell and hurt my wrist and five years ago I had broken my wrist because I found out my girlfriend was cheating on me and I punched the wall and broke it, well my wrist is gonna hurt more now because of that previous experience than if I hadn’t done that. Nociception is also very important for survival. We need nociception, if we were not capable of experiencing nociception we would die. The stimulation of nociceptors are necessary to mount the necessary inflammatory reaction following an injury in order to initiate the healing process. 30 Workshop de Aplicaciones
Now we’re going to go through and demonstrate the applications. Any questions? We will consider some of the specific situations discussed earlier today with the clinical scenario of the 25 year old recreational runner.

When using kinesiology taping in practice there are key application guidelines for which a therapist must follow in order to maximize it’s effectiveness. Those guidelines include having clear dry skin. If there’s a lot of hair, you want to clip the hair with a set of clippers. You don’t need to shave, but just using a set of clippers will help the tape adhere directly to the skin the way it’s supposed to. You don’t want to stretch the start or the end of each section as you’re applying it. And you don’t want to touch the adhesive. That will affect how long the applications will say on for. You want to rub the tape once applied in order to activate the adhesive as the glue is heat activated and will allow the application to stay on longer. And you do not want to completely remove the backing of the tape until about 90% of the tape is applied for each section. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

UNA VEZ APLICADO, FROTE EL TAPE PARA ACTIVAR EL ADHESIVO Other application guidelines include allowing the application to be applied approximately an hour before engaging in strenuous exercise or bathing. There are certain ways that you’ll learn how to remove the tape. Removal of the tape is just as important as applying it. And all of these key application guidelines we’ll go through in more detail as we go through and demonstrate the applications. All of the key application guidelines are also in your handouts and they’re on our website on Spidertech.com. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

34 16 diseños diferntes.... ...más de 40 formas de aplicar
It’s very important for us to highlight that even though there are 16 different static designs in which you’ve just seen, there are over 40 different ways to apply, depending on what you the clinician is attempting to achieve with your patient. And it’s therefore not a cookie cutter approach. If you took the applications out and followed just the standardized instructions within the applications and the standardized instructions just on the website, you still would achieve a significant improvement in the outcomes of your patient’s management. But if you want to excel your skill sets beyond that and learn more advanced application strategies, the application line allows you to do so with versatility. Key point: Applications can be modified for enhanced outcomes for specific conditions. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

Now this slide is a very good slide to bring up a common question that we’re asked about sizing. Yes, there is only one size for this Spider Tech line. In your course book you will see a different image. You are looking at an athlete who is approximately 6 foot 4 and a nationally ranked kick boxer. Whereas on this slide there is an athlete who is bout 5 foot 5, who’s a nationally ranked triathlete. Very different size and athletic builds, but they’re wearing the same application. And what you’ll learn through this course is that the main therapeutic effect achieved with Kinesiology taping is done so through neuro-sensory mechanisms and not through actual sizing. The actually sizing is not the relevant factor. And the applications can therefore differ when they’re applied on different individuals yet still effectively achieve the desired therapeutic outcomes. So, for about 85% of your client base, the standard pre-cut line will be ideal. For those people that are outside of your normal extremes, like a lot of the NBA guys who would want to utilize the calf and arch Spider, wouldn’t be able to do so because their feet are the size of a normal person’s femur. So that’s where we end up utilizing from the rolls. We advocate still using the rolls, it’s not one or the other, it just happens that the precut application line has certain advantages that will make for it’s use a little bit more frequent than using the roll itself. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education

46 RODILLA ALTA SPIDER™ Aplicación Básica Ayuda con las siguientes condiciones :  Artritis  Tendinopatía Rotuliana  Mejora el rendimiento  Inestabilidad Patelo-Femoral  Distensiones de Ligamento  Rehabilitación Post-Operatoria  Degeneración Meniscal The upper knee Spider is utilized in cases where the individual is still quite active. They’re still involved in jogging and running. They’re still involved in cycling and they’re still involved in a high level of strengthening and conditioning. © 2009 Nucap Medical Inc., SpiderTech™ Education
