10 Hechos Culturales The Aztec Sun Stone The Sun Stone is not really a calendar, even though it has signs representing each of the 20 days of the Aztec month. (A year was 18 months plus 5 supplementary days). In fact, it represents the predicted death of the fifth – and last – sun. The face of the sun god Tonatiuh is at the center of the stone. The Sun Stone was carved from volcanic rock in the late 1400s. Spanish priests had it buried shortly after the conquest, but it was recovered in 1790.

14 Hechos Culturales The Mexican Flag Near the end of the 1300s, the Aztecs searched for a place where a prophecy predicted they would see an eagle on a cactus eating a snake. That place was an island in Lake Texcoco. The image of the eagle, cactus, and snake became the official symbol of the country of Mexico in 1821, the year in which it won independence from Spain.
