11 Criterios para distinguir homología de homoplasia:
Un carácter homólogo debe tener la misma estructura fundamental. Las homologías deben tener las mismas relaciones con los caracteres de su alrededor. Las homologías deben tener el mismo desarrollo embrionario en los diferentes grupos. La convergencia está causada por la selección natural, si tienen los mismos requerimientos funcionales puede haber sospechas de homoplasia.

17 Derived homologies (synapomorphies=shared, derived characters) are new to a clade of interest (first seen in ancestor of clade). Ancestral homologies (symplesiomorphies=shared, ancestral characters) arose before the common ancestor of the clade.
