1 SCAL ANALYSIS OBJETIVES Special core analysis (SCAL) is one of the main sources of data available to guide the reservoir engineer in assessing the economic potential of a hydrocarbon accumulation. They allow us to feed and optimize the petrophysical model that will allow us to obtain the highest percentage of the field through an adequate administration of the production system ADVANTAGES Laboratory data are used to support field measurements which can be subject to certain limitations, e.g.: Fluid saturations may be uncertain where actual formation brine composition and resistivity are not available. Permeability derived from well test data may be reduced by localised formation damage (skin effects) and increased by fractures. TYPES ANALYSIS Capillary pressure measurements: Porous plate, centrifuge and mercury injection methods. Electrical measurements; resistivity index and saturation exponent, formation factor at room and overburden pressure, and cementation exponent. Relative Permeability: Two and three phases, stable and unstable states. w-o, g-w and g-o Special analysis: Critical flow velocity, fluid sensitivity, permeability returns. DISADVANTAGES Limitations on the availability of appropriate rock samples from a specific field Availability of hydrocarbon-type fluid samples Unsuitable hydrocarbon samples (Value ° APi very close to water) very extensive sample analysis times for some types of tests analysis costs
