The concept of Pure Flexion refers to the bending of a beam under a constant bending moment. Thus, pure bending occurs only in regions where the shear force is zero. In addition, the pair of moments must be applied on a plane of symmetry of the beam in question. The beam of the figure, loaded symmetrically by two loads P, is an example of pure bending and non-uniform bending, as can be seen in its diagrams of shear force and bending moment. The central region of the beam is subjected to pure bending, since the shear force is zero, and the bending moment is constant. The end regions of the beam are subject to non-uniform bending, as there are shear forces and the bending moment varies.

Be the beam of the figure, the stress diagrams are shown below: A piece of beam is said to work pure bending when in any section of that piece there is only a bending moment. A piece of beam is said to work with simple bending when in any section of that piece there is bending moment and shear stress. A piece of beam is said to work with compound bending when in any section of that piece there is bending moment, shear stress and normal stress.
