Saussure stressed that the relationship between the signifier and signified is convencional and arbitrary, and that both terms are psychological in nature

3 SIGNIFIER: IT IS THE IMAGE WE HAVE IN OUR MIND OF A CERTAIN STRING OF SOUNDS. SIGNIFIED: IT IS THE CONCEPT OR IMAGE THAT WE ASSOCIATE IN OUR MIND WITH A SPECIFIC SIGNIFIER.

5 ARBITRARY: The relationship between signifier and signified is an agreement between speakers. Therefore, each language associates a different signifier with the same signified.

6 ARTICULATE It is composed of smaller parts that are grouped to form words, phrases, sentences. In a first articulation (division) the linguistic sign is divided into monemes: lexemes and morphemes.

7 INTERRELATED THE LINGUISTIC SIGN ACQUIRES VALUE IN ITS RELATION TO OTHER SIGNS.
