3 have an irregular “yo” form!
There are many irregular verbs in the preterite tense you must memorize! All verbs that end in car , -gar, and –zar have an irregular “yo” form! -car c → qu -gar g → gu -zar z → c

4 -é -amos -aste -ó -aron These are only “-ar” ending verbs.
Preterite “-ar”endings are: -é -amos -aste -ó -aron

5 car follow this pattern:
Verbs that end in car follow this pattern: atacar – to attack ataqué atacamos atacaste atacó atacaron

6 Verbs Ending in -car buscar – to look for pescar – to fish
tocar – to play/touch explicar – to explain sacar – to take out atacar – to attack

7 -gar follow this pattern:
Verbs that end in -gar follow this pattern: llegar – to arrive llegué llegamos llegaste llegó llegaron

8 Verbs Ending in -gar pagar – to pay jugar – to play (sport/game)
llegar – to arrive entregar – to hand in pegar – to hit negar – to deny rogar – to beg

9 –zar follow this pattern:
Verbs that end in –zar follow this pattern: comenzar – to begin comencé comenzamos comenzaste comenzó comenzaron

10 Verbs Ending in -zar abrazar – to hug almorzar – to eat lunch
rezar – to pray comenzar – to begin/start empezar – to begin/start cruzar – to cross

13 There are some stem changers in the preterite tense with these rules:
Only –ir verbs make a change Make a different type of change: normal change new change e → ie e → i o → ue o → u e → i e → i 3. Only change the forms in the bottom (sole) of the shoe!

14 -í -imos -iste -ió -ieron These are only “-ir” ending verbs.
Preterite “-ir”endings are: -í imos -iste -ió -ieron

Ejemplo: preferir (ie)– to prefer preferí preferimos preferiste prefirió prefirieron mentir – to lie sentir – to regret/be sorry divertirse – to have fun preferir – to prefer

dormir (ue)– to sleep dormí dormimos dormiste durmió durmieron morir – to die dormir – to sleep

Ejemplo: pedir (i)– to ask for/request pedí pedimos pediste pidió pidieron vestirse – to get dressed reír – to laugh pedir – to ask for/request sonreír – to smile servir – to serve repetir – to repeat
