3 Preterite of -ir stem-changing verbs
In the preterite, some -ir verbs have stem-changes only in the third-person forms (él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds.). 2 main types: e=>i o=>u

4 e=>i stem-changes:
servir (to serve) vestirse (to get dressed) preferir (to prefer) divertirse (to have fun) mentir (to lie) more e=>i stem-changes: sentirse (to feel) reír (to laugh) competir (to compete) sonreír (to smile) pedir (to ask for/to order) despedirse (to say goodbye) o => u stem-changes: dormir (to sleep) repetir (to repeat) morir (to die) seguir (to follow/to continue)

6 Other reflexive verbs reflexive verb => person doing the action is the same person receiving the action me visto => I dress myself visto a mi perro => I dress my dog Reflexive verbs have reflexive pronouns that show who the action is being done to: me, te, se, nos, se

7 Some verbs use reflexive pronouns but are not reflexive – they often describe a change in mental, emotional, or physical state and can express the idea that someone gets or becomes.

8 Examples of these verbs are:
aburrirse => to get bored alegrarse => to become happy casarse => to get married divertirse => to have fun dormirse => to fall asleep (to become asleep) enojarse => to become angry ponerse (furioso, alegre, etc.) => to become (furious, happy, etc.) volverse loco => to go crazy

I got bored in school. We fell asleep in class. Did you get angry with your friends? He became furious during the game. They got married this month. Yo me aburrí en la escuela. Nosotros nos dormimos en clase. ¿Te enojaste con tus amigos? Él se puso furioso durante el partido. Ellos se casaron este mes.
