4 Indefinite and Negative words…
Are used to describe things that are not specific Examples: someone, something In Spanish, there are negative words that mean the opposite of each indefinite word so you can look at these words in pairs.

5 Algo  nada El chico tiene algo. Él no sabe nada.

6 Alguien  nadie Alguien tiene una idea. Nadie habla en clase.

7 Alguno/a(s), algún  ninguno/a(s), ningún
Algún día voy a viajar. Ella no tiene ningún perro.

8 o…o  ni…ni Él quire ser bombero o dentista.
Ni él ni yo queremos estudiar.

9 Siempre nunca, jamás El pájaro siempre canta.
Ustedes nunca se afeitan.

11 Negative sentences: Place a negative word before the verb
Ella nunca se maquilla. Nadie habla francés. Place no before the verb and the negative word after the verb Nosotros no nos recordamos nada. Los estudiantes no se levantan temprano nunca.

12 NOTE In English it is incorrect to use a double negative
They don’t never know what the homework was. I ain’t never known no one like you. In Spanish if you have a negative phrase/sentence all indefinite ideas must be in the negative as well. Ellos nunca hablan en clase con nadie. They never speak in class anyone. (literally: They never speak in class with no one.) Nadie sabe nada. No one knows anything (literally: No one knows nothing)

13 Personal “a” Don’t forget to use this when indefinite words are used to refer to people and they are the direct or indirect object Examples:   Yo busco a alguien. (I am looking for someone.) Ellos no buscan a nadie. (They are not lookin for anyone.)

14 Pero vs. Sino Pero is used to mean “but.” It is used when the first part of the sentence is positive. Él es muy atlético pero no juega al baloncesto. He is very athletic but he doesn’t play basketball. Sino is used to mean “but rather.” It is used when the first part of the sentence is negative and the second part contradicts it.  Mario no habla francés sino español. Mario doesn’t speak French, but rather Spanish.

15 Práctica: They never talk. You all have some Spanish friends.
Ellos no hablan nunca. Ellos nunca hablan. You all have some Spanish friends. Ustedes tienen algunos amigos españoles. Some day I am going to Guatemala. Algún día yo voy a Guatemala. I don’t take choir either. Yo no tomo coro tampoco. Tampoco tomo la clase de coro.
