Lectionaries have been in use since at least the 4th century. Some were a continuous series of readings with each Sunday’s text picking up where the last one left off. Somewhere in the 1970’s the Protestant church developed an interest in one particular lectionary that the Roman church had developed in the late 1960’s. From that, a group of people from many denominations gathered; and work began on what was first tested as the Common Lectionary and has since come to be the Revised Common Lectionary. The texts that duplicate each other like some of those found in Samuel, kings and Chronicles have been condensed.

Relationships: From Advent – Trinity Sunday (Sunday After Pentecost) there is a relationship between the gospel reading and the First reading (old testament or Acts). During the Season of Pentecost, after Trinity Sunday until Advent of the following lectionary year, the preacher must choose which track to take: Old Testament, New Testament, or gospel. There you will find semi-continuous or continuous treatment the gospel for that year, epistles or Old Testament books of the Bible.
