1 Present tense Conjugation of regular “AR” verbs

2 Review: Subject pronouns – Words that replace the person’s name and used as the subject of a noun, in English: I, you, he, she, we, they, you all. In Spanish: yo, tú, él, ella, Ud., Nosotros(as), ellos, ellas, Uds. Infinitive - the simple or basic form of the verb, the unchanged verb with the –ar, -er, or –ir still attached to the end of the word Generally means “to do something” ex: hablar – to speak Conjugate – changing the verb to match the subject Conjugations – the forms of the verb after it has been conjugated or changed to match the subjects

3 All Spanish verbs fit into one of three categories:
“AR” “ER” “IR”

4 Every verb has a STEM followed by an ending.
The STEM tells the verb’s meaning. An infinitive ending does not name a subject. stem: infinitive ending: habl ar com er escrib ir

5 To give the verb a subject, you must conjugate it.
To conjugate a regular AR verb in the present tense, drop the “AR” ending of the infinitive. cant ar cant escuch escuch ar

6 Next add an ending to the stem
Next add an ending to the stem. Each ending goes with a particular subject. yo o nostoros amos tú as vosotros áis él/ella/usted a ellos/ellas/ustedes an

7 cantar- to sing canto cantamos cantas cantáis canta cantan yo -
nostoros- tú- vosotros- él/ella/usted- ellos/ellas/ustedes- canto cantamos cantas cantáis canta cantan

8 Examples: Ustedes cantan mucho. You all sing a lot.
Yo canto todos los días. I sing everyday. Tú nunca cantas. You never sing.

9 Since the ending of the verb usually tells the subject, the subject pronoun can be left out.
Use subject pronouns to add emphasis or when it wouldn’t otherwise be clear who the subject is. -Ellos patinan. -They skate. -Ella escucha música. -She listens to music. -Usted habla mucho. -You talk a lot.
