3 (Regular verbs) Spelling of “ed” form 1.General rule: most verbs – add “ed” Example: walkwalked orderordered 2. Verbs that end in “e” – add only “d” Example: livelived decidedecided 3. Verbs that end in consonant + “y”- change y to i and add “ed” Example:studystudied carrycarried EXCEPT: If the verbs end in vowel + “y”, only add “ed”. play played destroy destroyed 4. 4 (Irregular verbs) No rules. Some verbs have irregular past tense forms: Go – went Eat – ate Speak – spoke Buy - bought Run – ran Cut – cut These verbs don’t follow any spelling rules. Irregular past verb forms must be learned.
