5 What is the ELPAC? ¿Qué es el ELPAC?
The ELPAC is the test that is used to measure how well students in kindergarten through twelfth grade understand English when it is not their primary language. 8 The Initial Assessment is used to identify students as either an English learner who needs support to learn English, or as proficient in English. Students will take the Initial Assessment if: The student has a primary language other than English, the student has not taken the CELDT or ELPAC before, and the student has not been identified before as an English learner. 13 The Summative Assessment is used to measure the skills of English learners. The results will help tell the school or district if the student is ready to be reclassified as proficient in English. 14 The Summative Assessment is given to students who are identified as an English learner on the Initial Assessment. 15 Students who are English learners are given the Summative Assessment every spring between February and May until they are reclassified as English proficient. 22 Parents will receive a student score report with the results for each of the four areas assessed.

23 You can also: Motivate your child to keep using her home language. This doesn’t interfere with her learning English. As you talk with your child, pause to allow them to ask questions, make comments, or finish ideas. Ask for his opinion. For example, ask, “What do you think we should do?” Talk with your children every day about routine activities and events. Keep in touch with your child’s teachers and with other school personnel, and stay informed of her academic progress.
