3 El pretérito The preterit is the more common of the two past tenses in Spanish. It is used to talk about completed actions that happened in the past. It corresponds mostly to verbs ending in –ed in English. To form the preterit, remove the –ar/ –Er/ –Ir from the infinitive and attach the preterit endings.

7 Usos del pretérito To describe an action or a series of actions that were completed in the past To express an action, event, or state of mind that happened in the past and was completed at a specific moment or period To talk about something that happened for a specific amount of time (hablé por tres horas) To describe an action that interrupts another action in progress (I was walking to school when the doctor appeared in the tardis.)
