1 Double Object Pronouns
What happens when we have both direct and indirect object pronouns in the same sentence? What goes where? Information for this lesson from:

2 Object pronouns (Direct and Indirect)
IOP DOP Me Me Te Te Le Lo/La Nos Nos Les Los/Las

3 Double object pronouns
Our rules for pronoun placement still apply here. the IO/DO combination can either: -come before a conjugated verb (Rule #1) -be attached to an infinitive (Rule #2) Object pronouns can be used together in a sentence. We treat them as a single unit. -When used together, the IOP will come first, followed by the DOP, then the verb.

4 Double object pronouns
Let’s start with an example and identify the different parts of the sentence: El estudiante me entrega la tarea a mí. (The student turns in the homework to me.) Now, let’s replace the direct object (la tarea) with a direct object pronoun (la). El estudiante me la entrega.

5 Double object pronouns
Here is another example: Yo te doy el dinero a ti. (I give you the money) We’ll replace the direct object (el dinero) with a direct object pronoun (lo). Yo te lo doy.

6 A (small) exception to the rule
Here is another sentence: Juan le escribe una carta a María. (John writes a letter to Mary.) DO=una carta → la IO=María → le “Juan le la escribe” is incorrect. We cannot have two pronouns that start with “L” together (le lo, le la, les lo, les la, etc.) Whenever this happens, change the IOP to “se”. "*Juan le la escribe" must change to----> "Juan se la escribe."

7 Using clarifiers Whenever we use double object pronouns and the IOP is “le” or “les” (changed to “se”), a clarifier is needed to make it clear who or what is being referred to. You bring it (la comida) to Mary. Tú se la traes a María. They present it (el proyecto) to the students. Ellos se lo presentan a los estudiantes.

8 One more example... Yo se los pido.
Yo le pido los discos a mi hermano. (I ask my brother for the records.) Remember, we can’t have 2 pronouns together that start with “L”. (Yo le los pido does not work). Yo se los pido.

9 Combinations of double obj. pronouns
me lo te lo se lo nos lo me la te la se la nos la me los te los se los nos los me las te las se las nos las
