3 JOINING In the process the therapist allies with family members by expressing interest in understanding them as individuals and working with and for them. Joining is the term in family contexts that designates the process of establishing a therapeutic alliance

4 JOINING (Cont.) A. Tracking: In tracking, the therapist follows the content of the family information. Tracking is best exemplified when the therapist gives a family feedback on what he or she has observed or heard. B. Mimesis: The therapist becomes like the family in the manner or content of their communications. C. Accommodation: The therapist makes personal adjustments in order to achieve a therapeutic alliance.

5 BOUNDARY FORMATION Part of the therapeutic task is to help the family define, or change the boundaries within the family. The therapist also helps the family to either strengthen or loosen boundaries, depending upon the family’s situation.

6 SHAPING COMPETENCE The family therapists help families and individual in becoming more functional by highlighting positive behaviors. For example, therapists may reinforce parents who make their children behave.

7 DIAGNOSING In Family work, to make a diagnosis is to describe the systematic interrelationships of all family members.

8 ADDING COGNITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS
Suggestions & Information are derived from experience and knowledge of the family in therapy. They are used to calm down anxious members of families or reassure these individuals and families about certain actions.

10 Genograma Toño de 47 años y Bertha de 44 (PI) tienen 4 hijos: Lucia de 18 años, Pepe de 14, Luis de 13 y Arturo de 10. Anteriormente Bertha estuvo casada con Gumersindo, del cual tuvo dos hijos: Carlos de 19 años y Javier de 22. Actualmente Carlos vive con su madre desde que se casó con Claudia, de la cual tiene una hija: Mónica de 6 meses. Claudia tuvo un aborto espontáneo y actualmente está embarazada. Los padres de Bertha son: Aniceto de 74 años y Clarita de 72, los cuales van a cumplir 50 años de feliz unión libre ya que a Clarita nunca le dio el divorcio su anterior marido, Humberto, con el que duró seis meses de casada. Bertha tiene una hermana menor de nombre Beatriz que tiene dos hijos: Mary de 16 y Alfonso de 17. Beatriz es más chica que Bertha por un año. Los padres de Toño están divorciados y su padre: Alberto, se volvió a casar con Carolina. Toño tuvo un hermano que murió a los dos años de asfixia.
