2 Ever seen a sign that says, Se habla español. What does it mean
Ever seen a sign that says, Se habla español. What does it mean? It can be translated, “We speak Spanish,” “Spanish is spoken,” “One speaks Spanish,” etc. The truth is that there’s not a literal translation for it.

3 “Se Impersonal” is a special use of the reflexive pronoun “se” that commonly occurs in the Spanish language. It is usually used when the subject of a sentence is an IMPERSONAL subject or a VERB IN INFINITIVE (usually a THING and not I, you, we, etc…) It is equivalent to PASSIVE VOICE in English (Se habla español= Spanish is spoken)

9 To Form “Se Impersonal”:
1) Always use the pronoun “se” before the verb 2) Verb agrees with the subject in number (if subject is singular, use the 3rd person singular form of the verb. (SE COME MUCHO ARROZ EN CHINA.)

10 If the subject is plural, use the 3rd person plural form of the verb
If the subject is plural, use the 3rd person plural form of the verb. (SE COMEN MUCHOS TACOS EN MEXICO.) If the subject is a verb, use the 3rd person singular form. (NO SE PERMITE COMER EN ESTA CLASE.)

11 Side note: the verb is ALWAYS third person, but sometimes it is third person plural. Technically, there’s no subject in the sentence, but the tendency is to grab the closest noun and make the verb agree with it: Se comen hamburguesas en McDonald’s. You eat hamburgers at McDonald’s or…. One eats hamburgers at McDonald’s or… Hamburgers are what are eaten at McDonald’s. You use “comen” rather than “come” because “hamburguesas” is plural.

12 3) Subject may be placed before se+verb, after se+verb, or omitted (if previously mentioned)
Béisbol se juega en los Estados Unidos. Se juega al béisbol en los Estados Unidos. Se juega porque es el pasatiempo nacional.

13 Otros ejemplos de “Se Impersonal”:
Se prohibe fumar. Se prohiben los cigarillos. Se sirvió la comida española anoche. Otras comidas se sirvieron también. Se venden periódicos allí. Tambien se vende la revista “People”
