3 Background (Describe the AIP) District Superintendent Deasy has set student attendance improvement targets for the next four years Proficient/Advanced attendance is defined as having a 96% or higher attendance rate (missing 7 or fewer days during the 180 day school year) Kindergarten and Grade 9 were found to have the lowest rates of students achieving Proficient or Advanced Attendance last school year This year, our district-wide goal is for 76% of all students to achieve Proficient or Advanced Attendance Copyright-2013 © Los Angeles Unified School District - All rights reserved

Recognizing the critical importance of student attendance improvement, Superintendent Deasy has identified annual improvement targets, using Proficient/Advanced (96% or better) Attendance rates as the benchmark 64% of students achieving proficient/advanced attendance was the goal last school year; did your school achieve this? Schools that did not achieve 64% of students at 96% attendance will be or have already developed and submitted action plans to LD superintendents to improve student attendance this school year. 12 About Chronic Absence in Early Grades
Chronic Absence means missing about 18 school days, regardless of the reason (excused or unexcused). In the LAUSD, 1 out of every 5 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. Nationally, this number is about half (1 in 10). Chronic absence in any grade puts our students at-risk for failing grades and ultimately, dropout. What we know about chronic, early absence 12

18 What Parents/Guardians can do:
Send your child to school on-time every day! Make routine appointments during vacation. For illness, schedule medical/dental appointments after school. Establish a schedule and stick to it! Make sure your child goes to bed early so that he/she will be ready to learn. Prepare school clothes, homework and backpack the night before school. Keep a positive attitude about school and daily attendance because children are taught to value education by the adults in their lives.
