3 Why does my child need a six year plan?
An opportunity to have an overview of your child’s secondary education. Time to plan for taking the required classes and the electives. An opportunity to ask questions and be more informed about your child’s preparation for post secondary education (college).

5 What is a six-year plan? A six-year plan is YOUR child’s guide to successful junior high and high school career. It allows YOU to make sure your child obtains all the credits he/she needs to graduate. It is also flexible, and may change each year. All the information you need to create a six-year plan can be found in the MISD course register located on the MISD website under Guidance & Counseling.

13 What is a Pre-AP Class? A Pre-AP class is taken in 7th – 10th grade and helps a student prepare for an AP class. This is a more rigorous version of the regular class. An Advanced Placement (AP) class is a rigorous course that is aligned with College Board’s Standards for College Success. AP classes are ONLY taken in the 11th and 12th grades.

Una clase de “Pre-AP” se toma en los grados del 7 al 10 y ayuda a los estudiantes a prepararse para las clases de “AP”. Esta es una versión más rigurosa de la clase regular. 15 How do I Know if my child should take a Pre-AP class?
MISD has guiding criteria that gives guidelines to let you know if your child is prepared to take a Pre-AP class. An important component is that the student is: willing to attend class every day do the work required, and ask for help when they don’t understand.

16 ¿Como sé si mi hijo(a) debe tomar una clase de “Pre-AP”?
El Distrito Escolar de Midland tiene una guía de criterios que nos dan pautas para informarle si su hijo(a) se encuentra preparado para tomar una clase de “Pre-AP”. El criterio más importante es que el estudiante esté dispuesto a asistir a clase todos los días terminar el trabajo que se requiere y que pida ayuda cuando no entiende algo.

17 Junior High School Pre-AP Guiding Criteria 2016-2017
Pre-AP Social Studies, Science, and/or English:   * 5th grade STAAR Reading Scale Score of 1582 * 6th grade STAAR Reading Scale Score of 1629 * 85 Final average for ELAR 6th grade Math– Students must meet 2 of the 3 following criteria: * 5th grade STAAR Math Scale Score of 1627 * 6th grade STAAR Math Scale Score of 1658 or 60th NPR on achievement test * 85 final average in grade 6 math  Foreign Language Guiding Criteria:  Pre-qualifying conditions for 7th graders taking Spanish I:   * 1592 Scale Score on 6th grade STAAR reading * 85 in 6th grade ELA

19 Junior High School Pre-AP Guiding Criteria 2016-2017
 Important Notice: Prior to taking the course, students and parents at all grade levels will sign an Pre-AP Agreement which explains the rigor and expectations required. If you choose to take a Pre-AP class next year, you must have an 80 average at the end of the first semester to automatically continue in that Pre-AP course for the second semester. If you do not have an 80 average, the campus principal may consider extenuating circumstances and allow you to continue in the course for the second semester on a probationary status, or you may be placed in the regular version of the course.

21 If your student is interested in Pre-AP classes:
MISD is asking that you conference with your counselor and teacher for guidance. Parents and students sign an enrollment agreement that states that your child will be in the class for at least three weeks before they can change their schedule. This will give your student an opportunity to understand the expectations of the course. Students who are testing for GT placement need to fill out a Pre-AP contract as well.

MISD les pide que se reúnan con el consejero y el maestro para que les proporcionen información y los guíen en el proceso. 23 Enrollment Agreement for Junior High School (Grades 7-8)
Pre-Advanced Placement Courses Student Name: Last First MI ID #: Grade:_________ Campus: ____________ The student requests placement in the following Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) course(s): __________________________________________ ________________________________________ __________________________________________ ________________________________________ The student and parent/guardian understand and agree to the following: 1. The student may only voluntarily withdraw from a course between the 16th day of the semester to the last day of the 2nd six weeks for either a one-semester or two-semester class. A student may also exit after completing the end of the first semester course. To exit an AP or Pre-AP course within the designated time window, students must have completed the following steps: * Attend a minimum of 3 documented tutorial sessions * Attend a documented student/parent/teacher conference that includes the parent and teacher signatures on the exit form. The exit form must be submitted to the counselor’s office for consideration by the AP Steering Committee. 2. The student must have an 80 average in each Pre-AP course at the end of the first semester to automatically continue in that Pre-AP course for the second semester. If the student does not have an 80 average, the campus principal may consider extenuating circumstances and allow the student to continue in the course for the second semester on a probationary status. (EXCEPTION: See criteria for Algebra I 8th grade in #3). 3. Students enrolled in Algebra I in the 8th grade must maintain at least an 80 average to remain in the class. If a student’s grade falls below 80 during both the first and second six weeks, the student will be removed from the course. If a student’s grade falls below 80 at the end of the semester, it is strongly advised that the student exit from the course. 4. The Pre-AP courses are rigorous and have high expectations. Parents and students should consider the course load when registering for classes. Students taking Pre-AP ELA and Social Studies courses will be required to participate in an AP Summer Reading Program assignment, which will be posted on the MISD website. I understand and agree to the requirements stated in this agreement. 25 CREDITS! What are credits?
Beginning in 9th grade, credits are classes. When you successfully pass a full-year of a class, you gain 1 credit. If you take a class that only lasts for one semester, and you successfully pass, you gain ½ credit.

26 ¡CREDITOS! ¿Qué son créditos?
A partir del grado 9, créditos son clases. Al pasar con éxito un año completo de una clase, usted gana 1 crédito. Si usted toma una clase que sólo dura un semestre, y que pasan con éxito, usted obtiene 1/2 crédito.

27 CREDITS! You need 26 credits to graduate: 22 credits are foundation courses. 4 credits are electives in an endorsement. Receiving a credit is based on two things: 1. A grade of 70 or higher 2. Your attendance ~ you must attend 90% of the time each semester. If you take a class and are not awarded a credit, the only way to get that credit is to RETAKE the class.

ENDORSEMENTS Before a student enters 9th grade they must choose an Endorsement. This is a requirement for graduation. You may choose from 5 endorsements: Arts and Humanities (Art, Music and Florists). Business and Industry (Finance, Accounting). Public Services (Hotel Management, Teaching, Social Worker and Psychology). STEM (Engineering, Computer Science). Multidisciplinary (Combination of classes from the First 4).

32 PROGRAMS OF STUDY Students will also choose a Program of Study
These courses do NOT exempt students from the required courses for graduation. These courses are electives and will give students a strong foundation in a particular area. Students may choose from the programs of study in the various endorsements. Students also may take Career and Technology courses as Programs of Study. Some examples of this include: Health related careers (nursing) ROTC Auto-Mechanics Cosmetology

36 What classes do I need to take in high school?
Your first step is deciding what Endorsement plan you want to follow. Your Endorsement plan determines what Program of Study you need for graduation. Every student is on the Foundation Plan. Students can earn a distinguished level of achievement. This level of achievement is required to be considered for the top 10% for College Admission. Performance acknowledgements can also be achieved. Work with your High School Counselor to learn how your student can earn these acknowledgements. . Before we start working on the four-year plan, I want us to look through the MISD Register so your are familiar with the material.

37 ¿Qué clases necesito tomar en Preparatoria (High School)?
Tu primer paso es decidir cual Plan de Certificación te gustaría seguir. Tu Plan de Certificación determina que Programa de Estudios necesitas para graduarte. Todos los estudiantes están en el Plan Fundación Los estudiantes pueden obtener un nivel de logro distinguido. Grade Point Averaging Entering Freshman Class of and Beyond GRADE CORE ENHANCED/PRE-AP/AP PLEASE NOTE: Enhanced grade points are forfeited if a student is removed from an Enhanced (B/T or Pre AP, AP) course before the completion of the semester. The student will receive grade points for the course to which the student is assigned.
