5 Q: What is Excellent Attendance?
A: Students with Proficient/Advanced attendance miss no more than 7 days per school year. The LAUSD goal is for ALL students to attend at a rate of 96% or higher.

Research has found that a high number of absences in Kindergarten is directly related to lower achievement in 1st grade. We can see a significant decrease (especially in Math and reading performance) with a 6% of absenteeism . 8 Definition & Frequency of Chronic Absence in Early Grades
Chronic Absence means missing about 18 school days, regardless of the reason (excused or unexcused). In the LAUSD, 1 out of every 5 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. Nationally, this number is about half (1 in 10). Chronic absence in any grade puts our students at-risk for failing grades and ultimately, dropout.

Ausencias crónicas significa tener aproximadamente 18 faltas escolares, no importa cual fue la razón (justificadas o injustificadas) En el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles, 1 de cada 5 estudiantes de kínder y primer grado son reportados con ausencias crónicas. 10 A chronically absent Kindergarten student:
Un estudiante que esta ausente de manera crónica en kínder: Misses out on valuable instructional time Pierde tiempo de instrucción Requires extra time from teachers to catch up, leaving less educational time for other students Requiere mas tiempo del/la maestro/a para ponerse al día, esto deja menos tiempo para los otros estudiantes Is more likely to perform poorly in first grade, especially in Reading Es mas probable que no se desempeñe académicamente en el primer grado, especialmente en lectura

11 A student chronically absent in Kindergarten:
Un estudiante que esta ausente de manera crónica en kínder: Is likely to have lower academic achievement in fifth grade Es mas probable de no obtener logros académicos en el quinto grado Is at-risk for school failure and are more likely to eventually drop out Están en peligro de reprobar y son mas probables de dejar la escuela

12 What Parents/Guardians can do:
Send your child to school on-time every day! Make routine appointments during vacation. For illness, schedule medical/dental appointments after school. Establish a schedule and stick to it! Make sure your child goes to bed early so that he/she will be ready to learn. Prepare school clothes, homework and backpack the night before school. Say positive things about this new experience. Share stories about what it will be like going to school. For current Pre-K students—Let your child know there will be more instructional hours in Kinder (6 hour days; and 5 days a week)

Keep a positive attitude about school and daily attendance because children are taught to value education by the adults in their lives. 4. Contact your child’s school administrator, counselor, or school nurse for help and support as needed!
