2 If you want to order a bottle of wine for your friend at a restaurant, you must be sure to say, Quiero una botella de vino para mi amiga. Why? Because if you say, Quiero una botella de vino por mi amiga, you have just offered your friend to the waiter in exchange for a bottle of wine! So you can see that it is important to grasp the different uses of Por and Para! Why do we need to know the differnce:

5 Uses of Por -Mode of transportation “via” - Viajamos por avión. -Time during which an action takes place (for, during) – Quiero estudiar en México por tres meses. -Because of, in exchange for, on behalf of, -Motion – through, by, along, around -Means or manner by which an action is accomplished – “by” -Per, as in “per kilo” -POR is used in many idiomatic expressions.

6 An acronym for POR A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D (This acronym covers many, but not all of the many uses of POR. There are many idiomatic expression used with POR) Around a place - ¿Hay un banco por aquí? Through a place – Paso por el parque todos los días. Reason - ¿Por qué llegaste tardes? Por el tráfico. After –as in “going to get something”, usually used after “ir”. Voy al supermercado por pan y leche. Cost – Pagué 20 pesos por las manzanas en el mercado hoy. Thanks – use POR after “gracias” Exchange – Deseo cambiar mi dinero por pesos. Duration – He vivido aquí por diez años.
