2 TENER = to have Yo tengo Tú tienes Él tiene Ella Ud. (usted) Nosotrostenemos Vosotrostenéis Ellostienen Ellas Uds. (ustedes) TENER is an IRREGULAR verb… (the stem does NOT stay the same in all 6 forms!)

3 Using TENER Use the forms of TENER to discuss things people HAVE, such as… Family Members & Pets Yo tengo dos hermanos. Classes Él tiene la clase de inglés. Clothing Mi amiga tiene mucha ropa. Physical characteristics (eyes, hair) Mis padres tienen los ojos verdes. Also, ALWAYS use forms of TENER to discuss people’s AGE: Tengo quince años. = I am 15 years old. Tiene veinte años. = He is 20 years old. ¿Cuántos años tienes? = How old are you?

4 TENER = to have  Yo tengo quince años.  Tú tienes un hermano y una hermana, ¿no?  Él tiene muchos primos. Ella tiene un sobrino. Ud. tiene tres hijos, ¿no?  Nosotros tenemos muchos parientes.  Ellos tienen la clase de español con el Sr. Lamb. Ellas tienen un gato y un perro. Ustedes tienen muchos amigos. 6 Written Practice using TENER (Textbook Activities) 1) On a sheet of paper, do Act. 17, Text p 180 (Buen Viaje 1) JUST write THE ANSWER. Complete the paragraph using the correct form of TENER. (Hint: Look for the SUBJECT of the sentence to determine which form of TENER to use.) 2) On the same sheet of paper, then personally ANSWER the 8 questions in Act 12, p 178. (Be sure to answer them using COMPLETE SENTENCES.) 3) TURN IN TODAY

8 (a form of) TENER + QUE + (INFINITIVE)  TENER QUE = HAVE TO  A form of TENER + QUE + an infinitive (estudiar, comer, escribir, etc…) together tell what somebody HAS to do… I have to study. = Tengo que estudiar. She has to eat something. = Tiene que comer algo. They have to write a sentence. = Tienen que escribir una oración.  In other words, it refers to an OBLIGATION (like a chore, an assignment, etc…) Part 2

10 (a form of) IR + A + ( INFINITIVE ) Use this construction to discuss what people are GOING to do… I am going to eat in the cafeteria. = Voy a comer en la cafetería. She is going to read a book. = Va a leer un libro. We are going to go to the beach.= Vamos a ir a la playa. They are going to buy a car.= Van a comprar un carro. You are going to take a test.= Vas a tomar un examen. The NEAR FUTURE construction
