1 End of the year notes #3 The present progressive tense

2 The present progressive  When you want to emphasize that an action is happening right now, you use the present progressive tense.  Ex: Ahora, estoy enseñando una clase de español uno.=Right now, I’m teaching a Spanish 1 class.  *I used the present progressive because I’m describing what I am doing right now.

3 Formation  To form the present progressive, you will conjugate the verb “ESTAR” and add a present participle.  Ex: Tú estás hablando(present participle) español= you are speaking Spanish.

4 Present participle  You already know how to conjugate the verb estar, so let’s learn how to form a present participle:  For AR verbs, you will drop the –AR from the infinitive and add –ANDO  Ex: Hablar---Hablando  Yo estoy hablando español=I am speaking Spanish

5 ER/IR verbs  For -ER and -IR verbs, you will drop the infinitive ending and add:  -IENDO  comer---comIENDO  Escribir---escribIENDO  Ex: Nosotros estamos comiendo el helado= we are eating ice cream  Ex: La profesora está escribiendo la tarea=the teacher is writing the homework.

6 LEER=to read  LEER=to read has an irregular spelling in the present participle. Instead of an “IE” in the present participle, you put a “y”  LEER---LEYENDO  Ellas están leyendo un libro excellente, se llama “Harry Potter.”

8 Dar=to give  Yo doy=I give  Tú das=you give  Él/ella/Ud da=he/she/you give  Nosotros damos=we give  Ellos/ellas/uds. dan=they/you all give

9 Hacer=to make/to give  Yo hago=I make/do  Tú haces=you make/do  Él/ella/ud. Hace=he/she/you make/do  Nosotros hacemos=we make/do  Ellos/ellas/uds. hacen=they/you all make/do

10 Poner=to put/place  Yo pongo  Tú pones  Él, ella, ud. Pone  Nosotros ponemos  Ellos, ellas, uds. ponen
