2 Gender and Spanish Every word has a gender –Pen is masculine (el boligrafo) –Folder is feminine (la carpeta) How do we know which it is? –Dress is masculine. (el vestido) –Tie is feminine. (la corbata) It has nothing to do with actual gender.

3 Its the beginning and the end…. The word “THE” shows if it is masculine or feminine. –El = the (masculine) –La = the (feminine) –Los = the (masculine/plural) –Las = the (feminine/plural)

4 Its the beginning and the end…. The last letter also shows gender O = masculine A= feminine Example: “carpeta” ends in “a” so it is feminine “boligrafo” ends in “o” so it is masculine
